Default huge gas car with power wheels body

hey guys.... new here to the forum and i was turned onto this sight from another member... and this seems to get more action than some others i was looking at... Im building a gasser RC car out of a pocket bike and an power wheels jeep.... im sure ill have some questions along the way for some of you experts here but mainly just wanted to post the build so maybe someone could use some ideas for their build or get ideas from people here... let me know if you all are interested in seeing this build... im in the very beginning stages right now... so there plenty work to go... heres what i have so far.... just the jeep taken apart and front wheels mounted.... and im about to start on the rear end.... plan on doing her up real basic and functional... then slowly making it better as i go and see how it handles and make improvements based on that....i know shes not to far along yet but im trying to do a little each day... heres a few pics so far....

hmmm i would try and build some sort of frame under it, then use the body on top as an actualy body, not a unibody like the original powerwheels was.

Yeah...... I second that.
You're definitely gonna have to make at least half a frame for the rear end to secure the motor and axle....

I've never had a close look at these things to see how strong the body actually is, but I guess it's quite rigid?
Still, if you're putting 50cc of pocketbike torque in there you'd wanna make sure it's secure.
I'm not entirey convinced that bolting the motor straight to the plastic body will work....

Interesting project.
Look forward to seeing more.

i agree with you guys... although the body is pretty rigid... for rear end it will all be on its own frame....i have tossed around the idea of doing it to the front as well, but i think for starters im going to leave it as is.... keep in mind it was designed to carry around a 30-60 lb kid. but since it is going to be going at a lot higher speeds than stock im sure it was fail one time or another, and then i was do the same for the front... as for now just in the back for the engine and axle will be its own frame mounted to the body. i have played with RC almost alll my life (not saying much cause im still a youngster compared to some of the vets here) but this is my first scratch build so im just going to keep her simple and functional to get it done and working, then for my next build after this i have some wicked ideas and plans ...

Yeah that's the best way.
Get it moving and turning first and refine it from there.

Lars... it sure is a plan... should all start falling together soon... still some things im going to have to make....

Dirty VinylPusher..... The axle is huge.... maybe strong enough to handle a rider once in a while ...

Heres the start of the rear frame... and the car standing on all 4... im still going to be welding in some supports and plates to mount it to the plastic nicely.... and somewhere to mount the engine... just wanted to get it on all 4 wheels today so for clean up i can just roll her around and not try to carry that monster...

Hey man that's looking good so far!

Might wanna throw in a couple of extra reinforcements to reduce the stress on the bolts securing the tubing to the plastic body.
Maybe something like this:

Hey guys heres another update from today...

Dirty Vinylpusher ... i agree it needs a little more support than just the 4 bolts on the plastic.... as you can see in the new pics there is a cross bar that will also be bolted, and i am going to use either a plate or large washers on the back sides of the bolts to help making the mounting stronger... I also have the engine atached to the metal rear frame so that the bolts do nothing but hold up the body, all the weight and torque from the engine is all on the metal frame... I dont want to make the car to rigid, i would like to let the body flex a little to help keep all 4 on the ground since it does not have any suspension built into it... but thank you for the ideas i appreciate the suggestions....

so heres some pics of what i have done today... hopefully i can maybe get some test runs in by sunday if i work hard enough tomorrow

That's a neat setup.
Did you decide on a servo for the steering yet?

kinda.... the throttle and brake cable feel like they need a little more force than i thought for them to operate so i think im going to pick up a
Hitec 805bb and use that for the throttle and brake, but i will install it on the steering first and see how easy it is for it to move the tires... if it looks like it struggles then ill get one of those huge high torque ones (tagawa? i think they are called)....

what types of fail safes do you guys use?.... my biggest worry though is the throttle servo failing at wide open and it sticking there... so i might just put a 3 channel and use the 3rd for engine cut.... what do u guys think?

My radio/reciever (Spektrum DX2) has the built in failsafe thing where the throttle servo goes to "Brake" position (not that I have brakes on my car yet) and the steering servo goes to "Straight ahead" position if the car gets out of range or the batteries in the TX go flat.
It's all I've got at the moment.

Other people here will know more about this.

I agree with the 3 channel thing though
With a car this size you deinitely need to be able to kill the engine via the radio if something goes wrong.

This is looking good.Cant wait to the see the finished product. I second the 3rd channel kill switch, would definitely be a great safety feature to have.Especially on something this big that could cause that much havoc if it got cut loose.

nice project mate i m looking for servos as well for my car i m using same engine and brakes and i guess they do need strong servos for steering i think you need a stronger one i use a 6 channel radio on my cars mine will be going straight it s 105 inches hope we can help each other

Thanks for the comments guys...

Kenazzo2000... nice project yourself... looks real good.  have you tried anything yet for the throttle and brakes? Im thinking the HS-805BB should be more than enough for this.... and maybe 2 of those to run the steering.  the only problem is i hear you have to run each servo with its own battery which for me that would come out to 3 batteries []

so in the end i might just run one for the engine and brakes and then one of these for the steering (kinda hurts with the price) but it limits me to only 2 batteries

I don't think you have to use one battery pr servo, just use one battery and Y-cables to power all the servos. The point is that the servos are powered directly, not how many batteries there areBut make sure you have a battery with lots of mA.

cool... thank you for the input guys...if thats the case i think i might try 3 hs-805's since that will end up being a lot cheaper.... 1 for the engine and brakes and the other 2 for steering.... i stopped by my LHS and they were all sold out of the 805's im here in sunny San Diego does anyone know where to pick them up here locally? or a good place to order them online thats US based and i can get some fast shipping options?

Servos just came in.... when i use the y cables to link them all to one batter... i assume the red and black are my positve and negative wires... and the yellow is the on that sends the signal... so for the battery side of it i can disregard the yellow wire? am i correct in assuming this?

i got the muffler on this week while i was waiting for the servos... so heres the pics

ill get some more later... going to try to get them all mounted tomorrow and monday...
