Yeah, it is pretty violent actually. The guy I saw doing it had a wood dowl sticking through his wingtip which he used as a handle. He would spin around and fling the plane upward as hard as he could. The plane would climb to about 50 or 60 feet and then he would just fly it until it came back down.
I've never actually done it myself - all my planes are PSS'ers, but it looked pretty cool!
Russ.

how do you discus launch a glider?
there are many ways to do this - this works for me
learning is the hard part - this is a right handed throw,
first off you need a ship built for this, the launch speeds can hit 90+ mph, 70+ is easy.
there are 2 ways to grab the tip
1. a peg (Carbon fiber, dowel. aluminum etc) in the tip, use the fisrt two fore fingers and palm facing forward.
2. lay your index finger along the LE with the tip in the palm of your hand
Stand left shoulder facing the wind, one tip in your hand and the other on the grass.
take a step forward right foot and start your spin
your feet should stay ahead of you this winds up the torso
the tip comes off the ground
let your shoulder and arm follow you around
plant your right foot as you come around start spining quicker
the left foot comes around rotate your head to look over the left shoulder.
plant the left foot
relaese the torso
now for the tricky part
you want to accelerate the left wing tip by bringing the shoulder and arm forward this decreases the induced yaw
release the plane with NO wrist flick and NO hooking the arm
there you have it - the plane climbs out to 100 feet (with practice)
as you get better you can take a sprint before rotation and make adjustments to fit your style.
have funn

how do you discus launch a glider?
I just came back into the hobby several months ago too.
I also got back into hand launch after seeing this new style at a park. Wow, I could do that. I never competed in the old style hand launch do to shoulder injuries.
So I was at the same place: How, what ect.
I found a site, Radio Carbon Art, and ordered the video of the 2000 International hand launch festival. Over and over again, slo-mo.
I ordered a DLG, and just got into the IHLG festival in Poway last June and had a blast.
There is only a small handful of production competitive ship out there. They range from about $300-$400 plus all of the radio equipment.
The new style of launch is a lot of fun and just has a learning curve like anything else. I have a couple of the European style plane and I am not very impressed. Only one of these designs made it into the top ten, and it was flown by a master pilot.
So I will be flying and competing with domestic craft next year.
I hopes this helps.I am sure the following will provide even more.
Later and good luck.
Jared
