Default Storing Hi-start

I went to get my histart out the other day to do some flying. It had been in my garage since spring. The tubing has rotted to the point it just breaks rather than stretches. I ordered a new one but what can I do to keep it in good condition?
Thanks,,,Matt

Sunlight (direct or indirect) is the killer of surgical tubing. I've been told that putting it in a cardboard box in a cool dark place is the best thing to do. I've also been told by the people at NESailplane, where I bought mine, to put talcum powder on it once a season. That's my 2c worth.

How old was it and how much had it sat on the field in the heat and sun before you put it away? It's quite possible that it was at it's end when you put it away but it took that long in storage to petrify.

Garages get far too warm in the summer. When not being used on the field it should be kept in the basement or crawlspace or, ideally, on the bottom shelf of the beer fridge (as opposed to the kitchen fridge where if you try this you'll "hear" about it).

Iv'e heard to take it off the spool so there is no tension. and store it in a waxed bag. Like a donut bag.[&:]

When assembling it, put talc INSIDE the tubing too.
