What thrust out of those 550 can motors ANYON#E?
I am looking for thrust in .oz of the can motors that come with 2m gliders. They come with a 8x4 prop and use a 7 cell nicah......for example the motor that comes with the electra.....anyone know approximatley?

I can't give you a number, but I will say the performance of the Electra or the GP Spectra with a stock can motor is marginal, and I flew them both that way a long time back and at that time I lived almost at sea level, I don't know what altitude you fly at but if it's 3 or 4 thousand feet, well ****ettaboudit The stock can motors will do a bit better is you use a 2.8:1 gear box and a larger prop, but don't look for miracles. Good luck.

I am at 4000ft [&o]
I have a couple brushless combos that I know the thrust of in ounces.
I like to know the 550 thrust to compare.....anyone happen to know?

I tried getting the promised performance out of the 500-600 can motors for years.
Direct drive, no way.
It took gear boxes.... and 8 to 10 cells.
I recently picked up an ARF 2M, the ROC 2000, which uses a generic 600 sized motor, and an 8x4 folding prop.
With a 2-cell Lipo, it outperforms anything like it I tried in the past.
Go to at least an 8-cell battery.. or a 2 cell Lipo.

Would a 3 cell lipo be too much for a 600 can motor? Or are u ok by regulating the voltage with the throttle stick? Thanks

I've run those motors on 13 cells. That's more than 3 Lipos.
Just watch your amperage.
Keep it around 25 to 30 A.

I'd suggest that sort of current on a simple can motor will shorten the brush life... a LOT!
If you're stuck with that motor then I really recomend a gear box also. But it's getting harder to find gearboxes for those motors. The outrunner brushless are sweeping the market.
Oh, and while I never did a 500 with an 8x4 a buddy and I did a lot of testing and a 600 with a 7x4 at around 18 amps only puts out about 16 oz of static thrust as I recall. But it's a fast moving 16 oz of air so on a racy sort of model it works but you need to be patient for the speed to build up. But on a glider that is supposed to climb in a hurry it sucks. That's why the gears and larger props.

I've never bothered to measure the thrust.
If the plane doesn't perform to my expectations, I change something.
