Large scale electirc glider?
Hi,
I am looking for a large scale electric glider with spoilers/air brakes. Anything over 3 metres would be large for me. I flew a Graupner Cirrus 20 years ago and really liked the shape of that glider in the air.
Any ideas would be helpful.

Lang,
The Valenta Thermik XL is a fantastic flying plane that I believe has an E version available. Never flown the electric version but the unpowered model flies like a dream and is probably the best molded sailplane deal on the planet.

The guys at Soaring USA should be able to hook you up with the electric version. The build quality of this plane is incredible.
Since you're going electric, the size of your field (and I guess wallet) is the only real limiting factor. There are several 4 and 5 meter gliders available, including the XXL version of the Thermik.
The new Alpina is available in electric as well but it's expensive. Everyone raves about the original Alpina, similar to the way people talk about the Graupner Cirrus, and the new 5001 model looks absolutely gorgeous:

Another plane worth looking at, if money is no object, is the LET Models Flash. Be sure and watch the video:

I don't think you could go wrong with the Thermik XL for the money.
Good luck and please post pictures of your purchase,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply. Absolutely fantastic gliders that you have recommended. For me, however,
a bit large and a bit expensive. I also live in Australia so there may be high shipping costs. I will keep looking.

RE: Large scale electirc glider?
Lang,
There's a fellow in the Netherlands that electrified a Graupner Cirrus.

I'm building a non-powered Cirrus with foam wings right now and have a mold from the original kit fuselage if you're interested.
Also, I noticed that the previous version of the Alpina (the 4001) is also available for electric power. Smaller and would save you some money.
I can't quite pull the trigger on the electric gliders just yet but am getting close,
Mike
