Exhaust Deflector
After putting the Heli together I went out to my LHS and purchased a start kit (12vdc batt., 6mm hex, etc). Also, the LHS (Local Heli Specialist) came out with a 45 degree deflector for the muffler. Right now I have it pointing about 45 degrees from the ground which I thought reduces the amount of residue from getting everywhere. Please note that I’m still in RFG2/hovering stages so I don’t fly it just yet. I sure flying it would reduce it significantly, because as of now…the clean-up isn’t so bad.
Questions:
Do I have the deflector pointed in the right direction?
Should I get a longer deflector to extend the exhaust further back, say secure it to the boom support?

RE: Exhaust Deflector
I wouldn't recommend putting on a deflector that extends beyond a few inches. It may work all right but I've seen many times that it causes excessive back pressure and overheating problems. One thing you could do is use a tuned pipe which will accomplish the same thing as well as giving you more power (although it blows everything at the tail usually).
Personally I don't use deflectors. The rotor and tail wash is going to blow the oily residue all over the place anyway. aside from deflecting it away from specific parts of the heli, depending on where the muffler is located, they don't do much.
Regards,
Mike

RE: Exhaust Deflector
You can extend as far as you want... you just have to make sure to size the tubing correctly and not make ANY sharp bends. For up to 10 in per cubic inch displacement, the OD that slip fits over the stock muffler outlet is correct. to double that, sleeve-up the size one tube size within 2 inches of starting. To add another length... sleve up again within 2 inches of the first. (and on it goes...)
