The cheaper 29BB kit uses bushings for less critical parts. The 49BB kit has 20 more ball bearings, so you'll have smoother action and longer lasting bearings. I believe the 29BB uses BBs in the drive train, but not in the control arms, while the 49BB has BBs everywhere.
It's worth it to pay the little bit extra up front to get them IMO.

yep, i agree. i bought the 29BB, and have just upgraded all the bearings with the upgrade kit and there is a big difference.

Have to agree, I wouldn't even bother with just the 29 bearings. The whole control system goes sloppy pretty quickly. May aswell go with the 49 bearings, it's a little more, but then you don't have to go and take everything apart when you want the bearings later!
