I found that a tail-first impact with a fairly solid surface (like the ground) at high speed usually does the trick.

What heli is it?

I have a similar problem. I'd like to get the tail rotor assembly off the main boom. I got one of the knock-off dragonflys off of eBay (the kind with the black Tx). The tail took a hit in after the heli tried to prune a tree and kinda lost lift. The plastic cap on the rotor motor was knocked loose. I managed to put it back in, but no luck with getting the rotor to spin.
