Whats the difference between nitro and gas?

Most model IC engine are two strokes powered by a combination of alcohol, synthetic or real castor oil for lubrication, and nitromethane for power. Gas is plain old gasoline from the pump, usually mixed with oil for a two stroke mix

Gas costs $3.50 a gallon and nitro costs $20 a gallon and last half the time of gas.....I wouldn't mind a gas copter

Well until recently you could not get "3-D performance" out of a gasser. Great for reliability, lifting things, though. They are so bigger therefore parts are more expensive (in general).

As stated above, nitro engines run on a methanol/nitromethanol blend with added lubricants, gas engines run on pump gas mixed with standard 2-cycle oil. In general, 2-cycle nitros have a higher power to weight ratio, and are much simpler in operation. Nitros use a glow plug, which requires no ignition system like the gas engine's spark plug. Nitro fuel is more expensive, but you may be able to get better deals if you're club can make some bulk fuel buys (need a nitro fuel manufacturer nearby for this). My club bought a couple 55 galllon drums of 15% nitro fuel for about $7.50 a gallon. We used to get it in bulk by the case for about $10 a gallon, but prices are up to about $12.50 a gallon for bulk case buys... but it's still cheaper than the $18+ a gallon most LHS charge.
Even so... larger planes go through fuel pretty quick, so most guys don't seem to go much above a 1.2 size nitro at my club... they tend to go for the gas engines after that...

True nitro cost more than gas. Also true gassers are not for the inexperienced and very expensive to repair. The trade off is more expensive fuel, butt much less to repair.
