Typically, the gyro is mount to the side opposite the sticker/label where the input axis is parallel to the main rotor shaft (YAW axis of heli). If you drew a line through the gyro entering the mounting side and exiting the label/sticker side ... this "line" would be the input axis. Usually, there is some sort of symbol indicating this on the gyro. The gyro "senses" rotational acceleration when it is rotated around this axis. So if this axis is in line with the helis YAW axis, the gyro will "sense" the helis YAW rotation and compensate with appropriate t/r servo response.
If the gyro input axis was mounted inline with the Roll axis of the heli ( " ... writing facing tail of heli ... " ), it would sense Roll rotation and then input corrections to the t/r servo ... uhhhh ... not quit right is it??
Does your gyro have a Normal/Reverse switch setting on it?? This switch being in the wrong setting can cause the "death spin" you speak of (among other things). Did you perform a gyro phasing test to see if the gyro is moving the servo correctly for the heli direction sensed??

Shouldn't mater which way you mount it. If it's spinning the gyro must be reversed. Change the direction switch.

You are absolutely right about the gyro direction switch ... when in the wrong position it will give the "death spin" indication.

I have found that the Telebee TLB-01's need to be mounted with the label facing the tail of the heli.
I once mounted one with the label facing the sky and it had real bad spins. Remounting it fixed the problem straight away.

droggy,
The atv should be adjusted to allow your tail servo to travel it's full limits without over extending and causing the servo to buzz.
And for the rest of you guys,,, ok you got me on that one, LOL. I just assumed the gyro was being mounted in the propper place but needed to know if it needed mounted facing back or side.
Yes the telebee mush be mounted upright, you can not lay it down on it's back. But it makes no difference where it's facing. I have one on my trex 450 and one on my DF-60 and both are mounted facing the side. I did this so the wires were going directly into the heli rather than out to the side where they had a better chance of getting hit and broke. Both work great, for an inexpensive gyro they hold good.

I only have one Telebee and it is on its side with the label facing to the right.
ATV is 100%, individual ATV values should be set in the transmitter as needed.
