Hi,
I would like to get into heli's and was wondering what is a good inexpensive radio to start with (I also fly planes)I was looking at a 6XHS any comments or suggestions ? Also does anyone know of a good book or web site with alot of info ? I looked at heliproz and was not impressed.

The 6XHS will get you in the air but that's about it. It has no pitch/throttle curves and when your in idle up and inverted you only have 60% of your throttle. If your looking for a fairly cheap radio (and a good radio), I would recommend the Hitec Eclipse or the new JR 6102. These radio's will take you a lot further then the 6XHS.

I agree. The JR 6102 or the Hitec Eclipse. Another that looks like it would be a good choice is the new Futaba 7C.

A good site for info is http://www.littlerotors.com/ which has a wealth of info including reviews and flight instruction from hovering through aerobatics. Check them out.

I agree, do not scrimp here...at least go to a radio that has 5-point throttle and pitch curve adjustment capabilities - the new Futaba 7C (love its' programming wheel), Hi-Tech Eclipse 7 or JR 6102.

I would like to use the same radio for my planes also, my planes have futaba receivers, will they be compatible ?

hitech radios are futaba compatable. im not sure about JR but i think not.

The Hitech Eclipse is shift selectable which means it's compatable with everything. JR, Airtronics, Futaba, GWS, everything.

I suggest that you get a JR 6102 or like a JR 8103 if you can afford it and a Thunder Tiger Raptor 30 V2 Heli.....Heard lotsa great things......

I"m sure that if you wait then you'll find many more place to go on the next.....I just happened to come across that site a while back since I wanted to get one (a heli) and wanted to find out some stuff on them...I love that site and will use it alot more when I actually do get a heli....

Ok, so far I ordered my hawk sport and picked up a futaba 7c tonight, the only things I need are a gyro and an engine, I'm thinking a PG2000 Dual rate Piezo Gyro and a tt39 or os32. What do you guy's think ? the wife told me what she thought ! lol

Spend extra money and get a Futaba GY401 combo with the 9253 servo. Used market around $150; new $190 "heliproz".

You won't be sorry.

I am in the same boat as you, as I just purchased my hawk sport, but I just completed the rest of assembly, and just brought it back to the hobby shop to give it a once over and fine tune before first flight. I was told to definitely go with a better gyro, I bought the Futaba GY401, and was told it is an excellent gyro for this heli. (I spent 139.99) Also, I was told to definitely stick with the OS motors, as they are most reliable. I still know nothing about controls, but I know that if you spend a bit more now, it should save you a bunch later. I don't know about any futaba's but I went for the JR 8103, they had one that came with digital servos and was not much more than the controllers that were only 6 channels. Seems like there is a lot more room to grow with it, when ready. As like you, my wife's opinion was the same as yours, just like when she sees me on the simulator! Good luck.
