Default Resurrecting 30 year old Kalt. Looking for advice on modern receiver.

I've got an old Kalt Enforcer that I'm resurrecting. It has an old futaba receiver, etc. I'm looking to replace this receiver with something modern. I also would prefer Spektrum as I'm new to the hobby and I've got a couple of planes with Spektrum receivers, so I'm at least a bit familiar with those.

I've read about "flight controllers" and "sats", but I'm not really up to speed on what is really required. I hope there is a "Safe" mode to help me not crash right away. I'm also curious about the number of channels needed. I have an NX8+ transmitter which should handle everything, but how many channels do I need in the receiver - I've heard 6 minimum, but would 8 be better? There are 5 servos in the Kalt plus one channel for flight mode. Is there anything else that needs a channel?

Thanks ion advance for any help.

Flight mode doesn't use a channel, it uses a switch. Gyro gain almost always uses a channel and most collective pitch helicopters (non scale) are 6 or 7 channels.

Flight controllers are used for flybarless helis, which yours isn't (to my best memory) it just needs a receiver with 6 channels.
