Has anybody flown a real Heli?
drafter,
they do have experimental aircrafts in form of a heli as well. i saw an article about that a couple years back. and heli, a one seater, comes in a kit, you build it yourself. i forgot how big it was, but not very big... and i think it was between $50K-$75K for the kit... i wish i could find that article again...

found some stuff, you'll get a kick out of this !
http://exp-aircraft.com/aircraft/canadian/canadian.html
http://www.acehelicopter.com get your own 2 seater for $70k
get's better: build your own for $8K ! and no license required ! http://members.tripod.com/~the_indian/
last a "real" heli, but still affordable $90k: http://www.aircraftselect.com/aircra...led.asp?aid=94

torque
thanks, where are you from? I used to live in CO, did a lot of flying there in the mountains. I am out east now, a lot more haze and smog here though. I miss mountain flying for the clear vis, but don't miss the density altitude stuff at all... =)

This is Modelman
Hi,
Modelman
I get what you mean when you say doging trees & power lines at 140knots. Thats a pretty exciting job you use to have cause its intense and the seenery changes.
I to been in a cockpit, but a virtual one (flight sim/longbow2). Don't get me wrong...I know thats its nothing compared to the real thing like you went through.
Thanks for sharing your experience w/the Apache.
I hope the picture works,if not then I don't know how. Its an Apache skimming low on the water.

UH-1H (HUEY) ARMY Pilot
I flew the TH-55 (Hughes 269) for 50 hours in the Army then 3000+ hours in the good old Huey Helicopter! What a great life the Army gave me. I could'nt afford those kind of hours on my own!

the real McCoy...!
I've had some 206L time at our shop. A bunch of hovering, some rotor smoothing flight and a crosscountry or two. Just can't seem to get enough of it.
And I agree, the models are more difficult to fly for sure.
Glad to see so many full size flyers out there too.

autoing
every year we return to the aircraft manufacture and do re-currency training, basically emergency procedures. we do straight in autos, 180 autos, 360 auto, hovering autos, and have even done some backward autos ( this is where you go to flight idle, drop your collective, pull back on the cyclic, and are coming down back wards, but still at a good hight, you start moving forward and do a standard auto.
i added a picture of the MD 600notar we use to have. it was taken in front of the hanger at mcdonald douglas. just before i flew it back east.

Has anybody flown a real Heli?
I was wondering if anyone of you recent Army heli pilots could answer a few questions for me. I am starting a 4 year university this fall, im in the starting Military science program (ROTC) and plan to do that for all 4 years. And for scholorship purposes I am really thinking about signing up for 4 years after school ends. Now my question is, How do I get started on the track to flying Helis for the army???

I've nerver tried a real heli but i have been in a simulator. It was at SAS Flight Academy in Sweden. Don't remeber what kind of heli it was. I guess that is as close that i get to fly a real heli.
I tried to fly a Boeing 747 too and it was pretty cool.
Those simulators is pretty scary, after a while you almost don't remember that it is a simulator. It really feels REAL.
The guy that i flew with even did a roll with the boeing. But that was after he had turned off the hydraulics. Otherwise something could have been broken.
Maybe someday i will get the chance to fly a real heli, but i will never get the chance to fly a real Boeing.

Has anybody flown a real Heli?
My former boss's son flew heli in the Army for over 15 years.. He noticed he was getting ready to retire, and he couldn't find a good paying job as a heli pilot, so he started flying fixed wings while he still had a few years left before retirement.
To make a long story short, he flys for Delta Airline now 747's before I quit. He said he glad he staying in the reserves to to fly the heli's. But the money is the fixed wing.

Has anybody flown a real Heli?
TORQUE,
I have many, many hours in the LOH OH6-A I really enjoyed that little "EGG". It's the one change they made that I dislike, The pointed nose. Seems to me it would distract from what it was intended," to roll over smoothly when crashing. The only real thing to worry about when going down besides CHARLEY shooting you was the ROTOR BLADES breaking off and coming through the canopy.
If I had it to do over again (which of course I don't) I would have went to flight school. Many of my pilots would have given me good recomendations. But I was a young dumb kid. Now I'm just too doggon old.
Enjoy my friend, be safe. and yes you probably would have enjoyed it. It's one thing you got to do was spend time in the AIR. Most of it of course in the LOH was getting shot at, but you got to shoot back....

I use a Futaba GY501 and have for 53 gallons of gasoline.
I have used several diffrent tail servos from fast high $$$ to the fast low $$$.

flown full-size?
i've had my private rotary wing rating for 13 years. fun, but one hour rental costs about the same as the repair costs for an average crash with a 60 class RC heli.
and there are NO acrobatics in full size rentals...
