Has anybody flown a real Heli?
I did get a short "hands-on" with a MD500E a long time ago, but that was a very long time ago.. Don't remember much of it.
I do however plan to take a "intro-flight" in an R22 this summer just for fun..
I've also been a passenger on a Hughes 300 (civil), a Westland Lynx (Norwegian Coastguard), and a Bell 412 (Norwegian Army), and the only experience that ever came close to tactical low-level flight with the military choppers, was +5G manouvering with a T-6 Harvard and +6G/-2,5G manouvering with a Bellanca Super Decathlon!
My avatar is a self-portrait during a 5G manouver with the T-6...

Real Heli time...
I was a black hawk crew chief in the Army, I have about 1600 hours as crew chief of UH-60 black hawks, several different models.
While in the Army I got stick time in UH-1H's, Cobra's and even a little in the UH-60. I also have quite a bit of stick time in OH-58's. I don't have any stick time in anything that is not Army related though.
I guess it helps that I am also a CFII in my every day life so while I was in that helped me get a lot more flight time than normal.
I just bought my first R/C heli though and I am taking it real, real slow, learning on FMS right now. The heli is all built, I just don't have the confidence to fly it just yet though. I understand how all the stuff is supposed to work, but I want to be sure. There is also a LOT of new stuff on this radio and I am taking my time learning it too.
I think the coolest thing though is doing 160 knots with the doors open hanging in a monkey harness while flying down a river bed in some forgin country. Or shooting the mini guns from the crew windows, way cool stuff...

Yep
UH-1 and CH-47Ds
If you can ride a bicycle, you can fly a full scale heli, a monkey can do it. 8 hours on average to learn how to hover, first solo at about 18 hours total time.
The true test of a heli pilots ability is when something goes wrong or not according to plan...
I don't do RC Helis though, the maintenance on 'em is too much like work (maintenance test pilot in CH-47Ds)

Has anybody flown a real Heli?
I've flown a lot fighting fires. I've ridden in 212s, 214s, 206s, r22s, r44s, and CH-47s. I've also ridden in a couple Highway Patrol 350 Astars. I liked the r44 the best.

I have flown OH-58 A+/C and the AH-1F Cobra. Now I'm waiting to attend the UH-60 AQC some time this year.

Has anybody flown a real Heli?
We chartered a bell jet ranger 3 while in florida recently. My 2 year old loved it. If ya have a chance to go up in one do it. I videotaped the entire flight, when we watched the tape i ended up shooting mainly the instruments and the pilots hands and feet, guess I was too busy watching "him" fly . Since being home I've scouted out a place for lessons, and counted the costs. A new boat or heli flying lessons ?
Looks like the new boat...
Now a question.... if you had a license and wanted to buy a heli what would the average person be able to afford ? Most prices I have seen are 300,000 average for a 2 seater....Don't know about the rest of ya'll but my sandbox isn't that full

The pay on lic.pilots?
Just curious how much will it cost to start from scratch pivate pilot to commercial intr. pilot and whats the average pay for a heli-pilot make,be it a civilian recreational, government or federal pilot. Thinking of changing carriers from an aprentis harbour pilot to a heli-pilot. I figured its more exciting to fly....I don't know I think I am inbetween.
Thanks/John

Helis
Cheapest way to get your heli ticket is to join the Army and give them 6-8 years of your life.
There's a saying that I've heard from several heli pilots that I know..heli pilots are a dime a dozen, all you gotta do is go down to New Orleans into a back alley and kick a drunk and chances are you'll find one..... (actually a fellow CH-47D pilot who is in the MI NG told me this, he flies offshore helis full time)
Pay isn't that good from what I've been told, in order to fly for $$, you gotta have anywhere from 1,500+ hours before anybody even looks at you (insurance rules). If you got the hours and experience (Army experience), Fort Rucker (Mother Rucker) is always hiring instructor pilots starting at 50-60k a year (www.cpol.army.mil is the website for Dept. Army Civilian (DAC) employment opportunities).
Yep, rotary kicks #$%^&*( over fixed wing any day of the week. I got my commercial heli instrument ticket and never bothered to get my fixed wing add on (I got bored after I soloed in a tiny Cessna). They say you never forget your first true love, I'll never forget my first hover...

Monkey Harness
It's like a vest/climbers outfit that you strap into and then it has a tail that comes off the back that attaches to the helicopter and keeps you in. It works too, I have tested it...
The tail is usually hooked to a real that will allow the tail in and out, or it's a static length for doing sling load ops, etc. Either way it's pretty fun to be able to move around the helicopter without having to be strapped down, allows you to do a lot of stuff, like making sure all the grunts your caring don't get sick on your bird, etc. Or helping the fastrope guys get out with out getting tangled up in each other. Fun stuff... don't miss it though.

Has anybody flown a real Heli?
Thanks WJKILLAY!
It was the time of my life and I truly miss the cockpit! Yes, Sawyer, I did Smoke a Camel. A bunch of them in fact. I'll have to dig-up some pics from D.Storm and post em'.
Homebrewer has it right! 1,500 hrs. Minimum! When I ETS'd from active duty, I briefely took a position as a VIP pilot for an outfit named Kay and Associates in Chicago. I was a glorified Taxi driver. From the city to the airports and back. YAWWWWN! I was very used to 140 knots, at 75' AGL dodging trees and power lines. K and A wasn't my bag!

Has anybody flown a real Heli?
I have about 1 1/2 hours flying a Sweizer 300cb. I was at H.A.I. (Helicopter Adventures Inc.) I plan to try to get into the Army flying AH-64 hopefully. I have flown fixed wing too, but really like helicopters better. You should try it, you might decide you would like to do it for a living.

flying a full size
I got the best job in the world. I fly full time for a living. we have had a MD600notar, bell 407, longrangers, MD500's. currently we have 2 MD500 and are about to order a new MD902. I just love it, fly all day, go home grab my xcells and got fly. believe me the rc heli's are harder to fly then the full size.
