Flying helis in winter snow??!
I live in Montreal, Canada. If I buy my gas r/c heli soon I will be stuck with it for winter. Can these helis fly outside in the snow?

I've flown in the snow/winter but it is not that enjoyable with helis. The ball links must be clean as well as a sloppy fit. The plastic shrinks enough that it does not take too long before the feed back/response becomes "sticky". The rubber dampers in the head stiffen as well. This was at -10degC or 14degF for you non metric types. With the new generation of electric helis this may be a more enjoyable way to do it.
I recommend you get a good flight sim. It's warmer & cheaper in the end.[8D]

I have flown a lot in the winter and never had a problem with the heli itself. The thing you have to watch out for is if you set it down on a snow bank and the bank caves in, or the heli sinks in, it can be a mess. Make sure you clean it up good afterwards so you don't have a ton of water in it from the blowing snow.
It can be awsome in the winter. Like any other time, be careful. Your fingers don't move as easy when they are cold.

Check the operating temperature of your equipment, especially the gyro!
Let your heli sit outdoors to cool off to the operating temperature before flying or you're going to experience a lot of drift as the gyro cools!
Lighter fluid makes a good quick start on the really cool mornings.
Floats make great skis to avoid the "crust fallthrough" mentioned above.

I prefer to use my gassers in the winter instead of glow. I use pipe insulation stuff to build up a type of floats. I must use a transmitter muff. Will try the Jetcopter this winter as starting with it is even easier.
