Ratchet = wrong
I was told by a very well experienced radio control helicopter builder/pilot that if ur pitch/throttle stick on your controller is ratcheted its wrong as the stick only picks up pitch at each point of the ratchet and not between the points, he has done away with the ratchet and put in a strip of metal somewhere that still keeps the stick in place and gives a smoother pitch change as ur stick moves.Has anyone done this,even if u haven't please tell me ur opinions on this subject. I think yeah fair enough but would i notice a difference, dont think so.

RE: Ratchet = wrong
Yes, you will notice a difference. All heli radios have a soft, non ratcheted feel to them. If you look inside your radio you'll see a metal strip with a peaked bend in it which engages, essentially, gear teeth. Often you can turn the metal strip over which will still give you some friction to hold it from moving when you don't want it moving. You can also slip a piece of tubing over it (shrink or fuel tubing will work) to soften the contact. You can take it completely off, but often this makes the stick move too easy.
A programmable radio that has both air and heli programming will be sold as an airplane or heli version. Different servos, usually bigger battery pack for the heli version, etc. The programming features will be identical. The air version will have a ratcheted throttle, the heli version will not.

RE: Ratchet = wrong
Even the heli radios without the ratchet I find too stiff, I normally make it quite loose. Like Mike said you can flip the metal strip around, then just bend it until you get the feel you want.

RE: Ratchet = wrong
Hi
For fixed wing or heli flying the ratchet is a complete pain. I dont believe that the radio only picks up the points betweeen the ratchets what is more likely is that it is damn near impossible to hold the stick on the apex of a ratchet, ( ie between points).
IMHO Do yourself a favour and get your set converted to a friction stick you wont look back.

RE: Ratchet = wrong
i wouldn't say that the ratchet is wrong, it's just personal preference, i prefer the ratchet feel but like others i did back off the tension a little bit, it comes down to what you feel is comfortable
