Any of the Hatori "cans" for 60-size engines.

I've got an SB-9 on my EVO/.46 FX-H; it sounds like a 30.

A 90-size would be even better; but your machine would look like it was equipped for anti-submarine warfare...

I'm new to helis & nitro... you said your .46 sounds like a .30 with the Hatori .60 muffler... is a .30 typically a whole lot quieter than a .46 or .50?

Thanks.

Well, it depends upon your definition of "a whole lot quieter".

The engine itself certainly makes less noise, but some (cheap) mufflers act more like amplifiers. For example, a Shuttle with the original can on an OS 32 is just as loud, or louder, than an Hatori on an OS 61. The Century "muffler" that comes with the Hawk Sport is another ear-buster on a 32.

Lots of variables at play with engines and exhausts. But generally speaking, the larger the internal volume of the muffler, regardless of engine size, the quieter the exhaust note.

Thanks. I'm getting a Raptor 50 V2 with and OS 50 engine, and I'm hoping the stock muffler will not be too loud. I want to practice hovering in my back yard, and I don't want to irritate the neighbors! I guess if they can stand my 2-cycle weed-wacker and leaf blower, they can put up with this!

Not sure how it compares to the hatory, but the TT muffler seems pretty quiet to me. Much less noise than most airplanes.

I think Spaceman Spiff is talking about the good TT muffler and not that two piece one. The tt 50 muffler is the only muffler I have seen for a 50 and it is pretty good. It is not too much louder than a 30 size chopper IMHO.

Noise is very relative e.g. an little 0.049 engine screaming at 9 feet at 20K will register far lower on an Sound Pressure Level meter then a Quadra turning at 8K at the same distance. But I have yet to meet anyone who would not rate the screaming 0.049 as the noisier of the two.

Ditto for helicopters - A heli with a louder muffler hovering 9 feet away and 10 feet up that has a rotor speed of only 1400 may not sound as "noisy" as the same heli, with a quieter muffler under the same conditions with the rotor speed bumped up to 1900 rpm.

That being said, at the same rotor speed, the quieter muffler would of course be considered less noisy if all comparisons where made at the same rotor speed.

Considering the above, using a rotor speed of 1600 you will find the following all to be very quiet (under 84db at 9 feet in a 4 foot hover) and delivering good power - the K&S units, some of the Hatori units and the inexpensive Century CN3033 (30) or CN3033B (50) - these are all much quieter and provide better power then the stock ones provided by Hirobo, TT, JR or Century
