I got all fired up to do night flying watching the Night Fly at IRCHA so I picked up a set of MS night blades and some Glow Wire. Had my first night flight tonight. What a blast! As I suspected from watching them the last 2 years at IRCHA it isn't hard to fly at night. It's actually easier to see what the orientation of the heli is! If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it!
BTW, has anyone flown the MS night blades (600 mm). They seem to suck as far as auto's go. I did a quick test of flipping the TH switch at 4-5 feet and it drops like a rock! Do I maybe need to dial in more pitch with these blades?

I didn't find it hard to judge altitude as long as I didn't fly it very low a long way out. I kept it in fairly close (200-300 feet out) and made sure to keep the altitude up until I got it close enough to see where the ground was. I wasn't using anything on the skids, I'm going to pick up some cyalume light sticks to make the skids visible the next time I fly.
The only thing that bothers me is what happens if the lights fail. The lights on the rotor shouldn't be a problem since there are lights on each blade and what are the odds that both would fail at the same time. The Glow Wire that outlines the canopy and the tail boom could be a problem. So I might put some additional lights on the tail and with the cyalume on the skids it should be alright. I've seen the guys down at IRCHA fly for the last 2 years and have never seen a light failure.
It was a lot of fun and now I can extend my flying as the daylight gets less and less. Can't wait to go up again!
