Default One-way hex starters

I was wondering what the advantage of hex starters with one-way bearings in them are. I have been using a normal hex-starter in my heli, and it seems to be alright. Why do people need one-way starters?
Thanks
Will

Some machines don't have the one way bearing built into the clutch/start shaft on the machine. On them the start shaft turns all the time as it is connected direct to the clutch. You need a one way bearing in the starter or the engine will try to turn the starter untill it is removed from the shaft.

exactly.

Some of my machines have a oneway on the
machine. Others do not. I've setup all the machines so that I only need the one hexwand
instead of multiple start systems.

Having the oneway in the wand w/a machine
that already has one is not a problem either.

So do you absolutely need a one-way starter shaft on a heli without a one-way bearing installed?

When the engine starts it can possibly kick and wreck your starter.

Absolutely? No but 99.9% of pilots use a
system that includes a oneway or some other
mechanism to decouple the engine from the
starter.

I had a GMP Competitor that I modified for hex start. It had no one way clutch, and I had no problems. I would keep the starter on until I removed it from the start coupling. YMMV!
