Default Tachometer?

I'm at the stage of setting up the pitch curves and headspeed on my heli and I'm wondering if it is worth getting a tachometer. Although some "old hands" have told me I can do it by ear I am not so confident . I'm thinking about getting one of the tachs that are priced around £30 (about $25). Would this be a worthwhile investment?
Thanks

Will

The bicycle speedo conversion works well.

I set them by how the heli reacts, but whenever possible, I steal my bosses Miniature aircraft optical tach. It is the best. I should probably just buy one. They really do a good job and get you where you need to be. I can get close without it, but never exact. It is worth it in the long run.
