I'm new to Helicopters and wondered if there are any good sites out there to explain the purposes of the various rotorhead parts and troubleshooting. I'm trying to resolve some erratic flight behavior and instability.
Thanks

Two things:
1. What type of heli do you have and what are the problems?
2. Try to find a local heli club and field. I found on in Davidsonville, MD outside of Bowie. www.mha.com

I have a Blade CX Pro and I can't go the club route at this time. Part of the reason I bought the Blade was so I could fly at home. I am a seasoned R/C aircraft pilot and aerospace engineer so I know what I'm doing (more or less). The problem I'm having is my Blade is unstable is heck. I spent a lot of time practicing close to the ground to get used to the collective response and get my hand-eye coordination. I think that I'm ok there, but when I try to hover the thing it is impossible to get it to calm down. The last time it hovered for a few seconds and then started oscillating wildly. I somehow managed to get it back on the ground in one piece. I noticed that the paddles on the fly bar were loose and I strongly suspect this caused the problem. I'd really like to find something technical, though, to explain how the fly bar (in this case) works and how it should be properly set up. I'm also concerned about some slop about the pivot for the main blades. The manual claims this is for damping, and that's fine. How much, though, is the right amount?

In general, you will find that the heli is unstable. Those things are a handful to keep in check. it won't go hands free for you, and for someone with many hours of hovering practice, they are lucky to get it to hover hands free for 3-5 seconds.
You are on teh right path, though.
make sure the flybar paddles are perfectly straight and tight. also make sure they are centered correctly.
