"As long as the engine is running you have unlimited flight time"
But standard batteries will last the duration of a tank of fuel without a generator keeping them topped up in flight, and it is standard practise (or at least good practise) to top up the RX batteries between flights on your field charger while you re-fuel/take a break/check for loose screws/etc. A field charger is a lot cheaper....
Running a generator requires power. Fuel consumption will be increased/flight times reduced.

well, someone who was interested in setting up a airborne camera platform was asking this! plans to use a petrol engined helis which can have a substantial longer flight time. So I consider it a very valid question to ask!

I think its over complicating things.
Even with a gas engine, flight times aren't going to be longer than the battery. If you needed longer flights, it would be better to buy a bigger/multiple batteries.
I don't like the idea of an unshielded generator around all of my servos and receiver.

Actually you can fly all day with a gasser and the battery will stay "about" at the same charge as you started with. Most folks I know use the "Jewel" system
It adds complexity I am not interested in so I run Duralite batts. They fly all day too.
