After my bent nose strut incident Vladimir ran home and whipped me up a double yoke nose strut. He also made it look scale with the angled yoke. He did a n awesome job in such a short period of time. It is 4 ozs heavier so I can drill out a little nose weight. He also made it with a four inch wheel which is what the scale calls for. If something on the nose gear fails now it will be above the oleo ram. I also adjusted the servo arms to get more flap throw.

Hi Terry,
Not much building in the last year and now I am headed off to be a flight judge at the Jet World Masters in Switzerland. After seeing the highly detailed work of the competitors, it's even harder to get motivated to build.
Maybe next year.

Terry,
I think John's hyper detailed 1/4 scale Panther should have been in a crate headed for Switzerland this week to show all those jet guys, that he will be judging, how it is done. It would have been a great giant scale Jet to put through the paces and then land like a Boomerang........ I flew my Panther at Fond Du Lac this past weekend at a great grass field. Everyone within a couple of hours of the place should try to make it there for their Warbirds And Classics Over The Midwest show every August. A lot of people there were interested in the Panther. Many of them were familiar with this thread. A few of them asked where the other four jets were. I had no good answer for them. I may need to start another one to fire these guys up and get theirs to completion. I can't start too soon in fear of passing them up again and in a year be back at this point again with the only difference being that I would have two finished Panthers................ John, Have a safe trip and take a lot of good pictures and videos to show us what we missed. In the mean time I started another thread with a video of the flight line this past Saturday. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/gian...st-2013-a.html

Hey Roger,
Unfortunately at this rate John and Johns Panthers will not be completed until 2015. Mine is the only one flying. Sebastian is getting close to finishing the one Vladimir started. If I bring the Panther to Litchfield it would only be a day trip on Saturday. It would make for a very long day. We will see................In the mean time I flew my fuse around the garage today. There was a fear of it crashing to the ground with every pull of the altitude control rope. Actually Sebastian turned me on to the idea of a bike lift system to store the plane out of the way. The fuse on the garage floor takes up a ridiculous amount of room so the fuse will go up on the cieling when the flying season ends. The lift holds 50 lbs so lifting the fuse is no problem. When it is up there I will put some extra hangers around it in case the bike lift should fail. Now if I wipe this jet out I need to build another for sure since I have this really nice lift.

Nice to see that Panther with an intact nose gear After the flights........LOL. Good job on the video of Wisconsin. You should post the vid here, there are enough jets in it to make it relevant.......

I took the Panther to Illini Super Jets yesterday and put two flights on it and about eight landings with all the bouncing and the touch and go's. The bouncing on the first landing attempt of the first flight was pretty intense. It wound up in a late decision to go around. I thought for sure something had to be bent on the gear. The second attempt it landed with some bouncing, and coming to a stop. To my surprise the gear were still solidly mounted in the plane. I refueled it and flew it again. The second landing wound up being one go around followed by holding the plane off for a glass smooth landing. I think a lot of the nose high attitude needs to come out when the plane is sitting on the mains. A few people commented that they think the nose wheel is touching first. As for the flights the plane flew great. Louis Patton and Quiqui Somenzini really couldn't say enough about how much they liked the Panther. I was tickled that Quiqui came all the way down by the plane to take a look and talk to me about it for ten minutes. In the mean time there is a little runway rash on the bottom of the plane to fix. Here's a pic.

I sanded down and repaired the engine hatch. It just needs a coat of paint now. While it is off the plane I laid up a few layers of glass on waxed paper to form another hatch. If I really grind the hatch off I will have something to put back on. While I had the glass out I laid up another set of intakes. I sprayed PVA and primer on the plugs a long time ago and they were just laying around getting marred up. Now if I wipe my intakes out I will have another set. I think intakes would be the least of my worries if some how they were wiped out. anyways I will have another set.......... I called Robart and ordered a longer set of trunions for the main gear. This will raise the mains and allow me to get a 6" wheel on the mains.

I video taped the process for getting the intake off the plug. I also taped the intakes back together and gave everything a second layer of glass...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW4Gj...m-upload_owner

The longer trunions went in so the wheel wells needed to be opened up. The wheel wells are opened to the center line as far as they will go. If I put 6" wheels on the plane the web between the two main spars will need to be modified. The one scale benefit, the closer the wheels come to the center line the more scale it is.

http://www.palosrc.com/index.php?opt...63&video_id=61...... Here is a video of the Panther flying at our club Giant scale show Sept 1st 2013. The flight starts at the 13:00 minute mark. It took off, flew. and landed great. I did accidentally take off with the GCU still in the plane. It was right where I left it when I landed.

Hi Jofunk,
I flew my FJ-1 Fury today: 8-7-2013 at Hamburg Pa. There is a link to a You Tube video on my thread. Check it out. You should bring your 1/4 scale Panther to the October Jet Rally at the Farview Flyers Jet Rally on October 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. 1800 foot grass strip about 150 foot wide. When you look at the video, you'll see what I mean....

Hey Larry nice job on the Fury. It looks like it flew really well......... I would love to go to Fairview but an 11 hour trip is just a little out of range....... For the sake of keeping this thread going and keeping the other guys moving, I went in the basement and cut a set of foam cores for another hoz. stab. I assembled some sheeting and threw them in the vacuum bag. Then I got the bulk head C temp half's out and laid them out on a 4'x3' sheet of lite ply. I then traced them out. The 4'x3' sheet will get doubled up to make two half's. I can do the whole fuse on a sheet of ply 4'x6'. Since flying season will be over before you know it, I can move along with the other guys who are still building and when we are done I will have another 1/4 scale Panther airframe minus an engine and retracts. Things will go a little quicker because all the engineering has already been done. Let's all shoot for July 4th 2014.

Mr fun and our long lost past club president John Knight came over Monday evening. John worked on tightening up the seam on his rear hatch and he also put another coat of finishing resin on his elevators.I traced out another plan view for a set of wings. There were a set of wing plug ins, that Vladimir machined for us when we started this project, that went missing for over a year. They were marked to go into John Roth's Panther. Since they were missing when the Roth Panther wing plug ins needed to be installed John Abrahamian engineered and made a new set of plug ins for that Panther. Since then they were relocated. John A made the additional set of plug ins to replace the missing ones and I needed another set so I traded a bunch of glass cloth for the relocated plug ins. They will eventually get installed on the two bulkheads that straddle the landing gear.

Does it look like a Panther yet? I cut the wing plan views out of the foam sheet I laid out........ I found a good Bic pen for general marking that works really well. It is called a Bic Crystal 1.6mm. It draws a nice thick ink line on almost anything. I will take the flying Panther to Elkhart this Saturday. It sounds like a lot of guys from Fond Du Lac will be there with their giant scale stuff. The weather is supposed to be nice Saturday.

I put a few more flights on the Panther at Air Supremacy Over Elkhart This past Saturday. It was their first time doing this and they did a good job of putting an a giant scale show........The landing trick is definitely to hold it off until the airspeed is almost gone. Once the plane touches it sticks to the ground pretty good.
