Living/buying a home in Florida
Hi guys! As I get older, I find that I want to fly more and in a better climate than the Norwegian winter!
So I'm thinking about buying a small house or condo on the western side of Florida, and I have been
looking at the area around Fort Myers. Can you give me som hints about the best/nicest places to live
in West Fla - I don't wanna live in a retirement community, and not too far from the sea - any suggestions??
We will be staying there for 4-5 months at a time, then go back to Norway for spring/summer/early fall...
I'm planning to bring a couple of my planes and have some fun in the sun!
Thanks!
Tor

RE: Living/buying a home in Florida
As an old TV ad use to say "Come on down". Western Florida is a great place to live if you like fishing , boating , golf etc. One great advantage is that we have 6 flying clubs and 2 hobby shops within a 30 mile radius of where I live in Punta Gorda which is 20 miles north of Fort Myers. If you fly jets there is a club in Cape Coral with a paved runway. Now is the best time to buy , the price of homes are way down. Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Punta Gorda are whithin minutes of the Gulf of Mexico. Port Charlotte is another nice place to live just north of Punta Gorda.

Thanks, guys - being a Norwegian we are lucky enough to have a public pension and a right to free medical care as long as you are a citizen -
if you travel, you get a certificate assuring treatment. In addition, we are adviced to take out a very cheap travel assurance that will cover anything -
even a private medivac plane home to Norway - if anything serious should happen. As for the temp - I just LOVE 90 degrees!! We spend every
summer vacation in the Greek islands, and the temps are often in that range, and we just love it. As for jet flying - I don't fly too often, and actually
wouldn't mind travelling around a little to fly, for everyday flying, I can have fun with a Habu or something similar..
I am planning a one week trip with my son in the end of February - maybe I'll see some of you guys then!

Suggest that you visit a few turbine friendly clubs in different areas of the state. Housing prices are below 2002 levels, there are some great deals for those with CiF. Stay away from the coast if possible, hurricanes and insurance are wild cards.

Not only that, leaving in the vecinity to Houston you will be 45 minutes away from:
1.City Life
2.Bay Side Life (with really good Sea Food)
3.Nice wooded areas
4.Access to non-stop flights virtually anywhere in the world where Continental Airlines fly
5.Lakes (our lakes are like your Mediterrenean sea, maybe a little bit bigger)
6.Some very nice flying sites and some great people anywhere you go.
Florida is nice, just watch out for Cadillac Sevilles driving like NASCAR, and elderly wearing speedo's. [8D]
Trust me I lived 25 years of my life in a Caribbean island. Tropics are overrated

RE: Living/buying a home in Florida
Man, I'm not gonna have any time looking for a house - I got to see all these flying sites and have beers with all these nice guys!!!
All I'll have when I'm going home is an empty tank of gas and a HUGE hangover!! [8D]
Funny, when we think of a nice climate and a cool place to go over here, it's always Southern California or Eastern Florida... how's the
climate in Texas from November to March/April??

Hey guys, where are the jet friendly fields towards the gulf side of Houston, Austin & San Antonio? Can you provide a list of club fields & links?
(Wisconsin in the winter resembles Norway!)

Houston Scobee field
Houston Bomber field
San Antonio (contact TP777FO) for info regarding their flying facility in Sequin, Tx
The Benbrook Fort Worth field can handle any sport jet and the mid-size heavy scale stuff (F15s, F16, small sabres etc.) but would be a stretch for some heavy metal. SM F4, Tam Supa Horny, F100 etc. etc.
