Hey Ron,

I agree with Michael...... I have over 20 flights on mine no issues at all..... and I killed tons of bugs during those low passes over our field! actually I don't need any weathering technique with all thoese bugs there!

Hi Airspeed sorry to see what happened. I have had my fans mounted on my A-10 for many, many flights for about a year an a half and never had a problem. Also in the A-10 my customers have I haven't Heard of a problem like this.
Michel is right... we haven't seen this happen in the A-10's we have at our field.

Finally maidened my A-10 yesterday. Was waiting for LTMA-1 sign-off. The maiden was uneventful... no flutter! I think I may be a bit tail heavy as it felt pitch sensitive.

Gonzalo, my Tam pipes work great.

Airspeed, sorry to hear that your fan broke. I hope your other fan holds up!

Forgot to bring my video camera, so all I have are these iPhone videos...

Hey Airspeed917, just throwing this out there, do you think there is a possibility that you hit a large bug (June Bug etc.) that smashed the fan? I know that whenever I've been hit by one of those while driving a motorcycle it felt like I was hit by a rock! I believe a big bug would do some serious damage to a plastic fan at 150+ mph. Maybe look for any "remains" scattered in and around the inside of the ducting. Just a thought. Love the A-10, beautiful jet ya got there.

Hi Dubd, great videos and congrats on the A-10 maiden. I am sure you will have lot's of fun with it. I used the CG Skymaster recommends and I have had no problems. For landing just find the right AOA and control de descent with power, the A-10 lands really nice...

Thanks guys! My CG is slightly behind SM's recommendation, so I will move it forward for the next outing.

Hi guys.. I checked for any remains of bugs or birds. . No blood, guts or feathers.. maybe it was a big bug.. there was nothing inside the nacelle
Not even any remains of the broken fan. I checked the bearings and they spin freely.. In any case I ordered a replacement from S/M.. I hate to think what would of happend if I didnt have a fod screen on the turbine. thanks for the input guys..... Ron

Ron, hopefully there is no damage to your engine.

Regarding pitch sensitivity, another theory is that my CG is fine, but I do not have enough expo. This is the first jet I've flown with my Futaba 18mz and pehaps I need more expo than with my JR 12x. I am currently at -35% on the 18mz.

Ron,

There is a possibility you had a delamination on that fan.... prior to any flight..... Then, with rotational forces became more apparent an then separation occurred. SKYMASTER is using a 3D printer to produce those fans using a method call FDM.

As I do lots of research on 3D printing at work, I can produce the same fan 5 times stronger and with zero possibility of delamination by using a sintering 3D printing process which is more of a high end 3D Printer. The fan smoothes finishing will be 5 times better. If I have the 3D CAD design I will be happy to get some fan out of our systems….. but I don’t have the 3D CAD model…. I can do one but it will take me some time. If one of my fans fails then I will do some amazing fan design that we can retrofit…. but until now mine is working quite well.

That would be be great.. I just hope it doesnt happen again.. they look and feel very fragile.. they charged me 150 plus 30 shipping for the replacement.

Ron, that price SKYMASTER gave you is quite reasonable for one fan in the world of 3D printing.... probably they are given you at cost. Yes 3D printing can also be done in Titanium….. but the price will be very very expensive.
Now if SkyMaster can switch those fan productions to a 3D printing sintering process that will be super! Very strong and the surface definition will be amazing. If they would like to do some traditional molds to injection plastic…. more of the traditional way it will be very very expensive for them due to the low volume on the run.

Best,

Gonzalo

HI all, started my Skymaster A-10 build , this past weekend, since it is painted, and most items done, I'll leave the Mibo, till the Fall.
Here are some pics so far, and yes, I am very happy, about the quality of the ARF .
I choose to use a Royal Power box, placed in the center of the jet.
The batteries, up front for CG reasons
The air tanks, next to the batteries
The UAT"s(PST), next to the air tanks
The pumps and valves, on the lowest deck
The air valves, etc. on the upper deck, behind the canopy, for easy access.
Also choose to add a carbon plate for the stab, as I will be removeng the tail for transpotation, many times.

Pete, looks great. I suspect you're going to want the PowerBox in the nose for weight. In the nose of my A-10 I have a PowerBox Comp SRS, 2x 2s A123 5000mah 2x 3s A123 2500mah, and 1.5 pounds of lead!

Mick, my A-10 is balanced slightly ahead of the wing tube, which is why I am surprised it felt pitch sensitive.

Thanks for the videos Mick and Ron! They're motivation for me to press on. My A-10 arrived a couple of weeks ago and I took this week off of work to focus on making some serious progress on the build. This thread has been a great tutorial. Thanks to all who have built the SM A-10 and have shared their discoveries and shortcuts!
