I'm curious about something; I wasoriginally looking at something like the Tornado for a first jet, andthe CARF MIG-15 as something I could kind of "graduate" into as I become more experienced. Being one who likes to be financially "efficient", I was reading the statements about the stability of the CARF MIG-15 and how they state "The MiG-15 is even suitable to be your very first jet. Because it flies so smooth and calm..." That led me to thinking that Icould just cut to the chase and get the MIG as a first jet, however I wanted to run that by you guys first.

I tend to pick up things VERY quickly, but I don't want to get a model that I'm going to struggle to learn on. I tend to sell things that I outgrow (and that has been a painful process in the past, because I outgrow things quickly), but if the prudent thing is to go for a pure trainer first and then sell it later (because financially I can't just have all kinds of models laying around) before I fly the MIG, I have no problem doing that if that's what you guys think I should do.

I have never heard of anyone getting a CARF Mig as a first jet but I suspect someone has. That is nearly an impossible question for a forum. What do you fly! How long? I would suggest you hang-out at the TIMPA field with guys that fly jets and know you to get valid opinions and the info you need to decide what would be the best first jet for you. There are several recent threads you can read about 'first jets'.

i had the option of many jets and jet trainers 2 years ago
when i started
i jumped in to the jet i loved in the air l 39
i had 12 flights before i stalled it on landing and made it a submarine in the water
this was due to not knowing flight characteristics of this model stall speeds etc

i have had 5 jets since then and i am flying now a boomerang e l a n one of the best advanced trainers i
believe today on the market
i love the fact that i can go to the field and feel so comfortable to make 4-6 flights a day and not worry
about those small bad characteristics
this plane flies fast slow and has all acrobatic capabilities
i am currently selling it now on r c u

i have a jet central rabbit in it and its the perfect combo i think



it would be wise to build up experience because it might be less expensive in the long run as in my case i went the other way
and had to pay for it

its also about support if you have the utmost supporting cast with you go for 15 but make sure they are
the experts

There are several of us that fly jets at Timpa here in Tucson. There is also one person new to jets that is building a Comp-Arf Mig as his first jet. I thought it might be you so I called him. He said although your post sounds just like him it was not.

Thanks for the post - you make some good points

I'd warmly recommend the Boomerang Elan as the first jet. I really enjoy mine still after 80 flights. Very predictable flying characteristics, decent looks, easy to transport. Tolerates lots of crosswind. Easy to land- the MiG-15 is not this easy. Simple construction. What more?

I'll take a look at that!

Toumas has a very good point, but it's not all about the flying.
An Elan has a big advantage over a scale type jet, easy to assemble but most importantly superb access to everything, you will not enjoy this feature on a scaly.
When you are new to turbines you will appreciate the access to just about everything simply by removing one full length hatch, think about it!

The Elan...hands down! Easy to learn on and still fun to fly every weekend for even the experienced jetaholic. Put a P120 in it and you will have unlimited vertical and an engine you can use in a lot of other sport jets.

Additional advantage not mentioned....Patricia! Boomerang USA has parts on hand for it.

I agree on the Elan. Fantastic Model and Patricia @ Boomerang is just great. However, they don't fly very good without the wing tube. DON"T ASK.....

I don't fly jets, I fly a Habu foamy but I don't think that counts. I would think if you get good on a Habu 32e you would be ready to fly most jets... and a bonus you might wind up liking the Habu 32 and it will always fit snuggy with your other airplanes.

The CARF Eurosport looks like a bad ass jet that I think would be a bit easier to fly than a scale jet. I wouldn't be afraid to fly it as my first non EDF jet. But that being said, I still agree with my last post... you can't go wrong with a Habu 32.

It's hard to believe I did something that stupid, but I did. Thinking back it was kind of scarry considering what could have happened. As it is I am out an Elan and a P-80. Both being replaced. You got to love the Elan. Thinking back, I've been flying RC since I was 18 (now 65) and it is one of the very few models I have losted and then got an exact replacement. Most of the time I just move on. But the Elan is just that good of a flyer. Fast, Slow, rightside up upside down, and big enough for my old eyes to see

oh and by the way i too did an idiot move and had a miscalculation with my first elan
after my incident i had another elan within ten days and in the air again on the twelve day

one of the most important things that i perfected with this jet for sure is the fact that i had 5 flights in one day and all of them were dead stick landings perfectly on the numbers at my field they glide beautifully
it was not the planes fault it was rpm idle set to low and caused it to go into failsafe or idle
so i fixed that prob and i have about 100 flights in less two months

Every time I try a dead stick the runway moves. I hate it when that happens.

If you can fly a heavy prop warbird you will have a very easy time with the Mig as your first jet. The problem with the Mig is that is a bit more complex than others, and you might not need that additional burden for a first jet. They are lightly loaded, handle very well and you can slow them down. I wouldnt even think about a Euro for a first jet, can pretty much be assured that you will get behind the power curve on a landing and end up with holes in your wings. It is a BIG delta and when the AOA comes up with the power down it sinks-fast. Now all that being said my first turbine was a BVM T-33 Ram750 combo. It survived quite a while, even long enough for me to sell it. Scotty
