Default RE: Reliable Batteries

Guys, I appreciate the recommendations from my past customers. We have actually just recently stopped selling the A123's, just due to the production time required. We are shifting our efforts to the growing evoJet engine sales and support. I too recommend Electro Dynamics for your future A123 needs. In fact I just sent them my NASA account....it took me a few minutes to build up the strength to send that account away

We are still offering all of our other products and equipment!

Regardless who you buy your A123's from, I'm always available for questions. If your not using A123's, you're missing out. Safer, more reliable, no regulator need, longer lasting....there is no downside.

Whats the down side to lithium IONs, before A123s everyone said the same thing about IONs

i use lithium ion in all my jets for receiver and ecu with a few planes having lipos on the ecu that i can get to easy for charging outside the plane,i guess the new down side to ions is the regulators and the fact that you can't hard charge them at the field but then again i have never had to charge a ion in good condition getting 5-6 flights with two 2600 mah packs on the receiver,i do like the a123 batteries just have heard and seen a few guys have trouble burning up servos with them when freshly charge

If you are using Lithium ions for the ECU, they will not start most turbines equiped with kero start.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying they are bad, I'm simply saying A123's are better.

Li-Ion's require a regulator (another piece of equipment to possible fail), are still a fire hazard (although not half as bad as lipoly's), and only last about 200-300 cycles (if they are high quality).

I kind of chuckle when people say A123's burn up servos.....the MAX voltage of an A123 FRESH off the charge is 7.2, a 5 cell nimh pack - 7. People have used older servos designed for 4.8 and burned them up....some have even used older servos designed for a 5 cell nimh and burned them up, but I can tell you that I have used A123's with the factory recommended servos in a Bandit ARF (and there are some small ones in there) and I never had so much as a glitch. Use new equipment and you won't have a problem. Anyone that I have ever heard of losing a servo to an A123 was using a servo 4-7 years old. Within a minute of being turned on, they settle down to 6.6 volts where they remain for the majority of their ~2000 Mah life.

And yes, Li-ions have a hard time putting out the power required for some Kero start turbines, mostly the turbines using a 6 volt system (Jet Cat, Jet Centralm, etc,) The lower the voltage, the higher the amp draw.

yeah I would never use them on ECU, Only reason I have not changed over is the fact I cannot buy a switch like im adding to my jet that will show voltage of A123s. I just like being able to put a load on my batteries and check between flights.

Regarding the issue of charging both batteries at the same time, if you use two separate chargers to charge them at the same time does that eliminate the problem????????

other than charge time and high discharge is there any other advantages? I was planning on using IONs with my jet since my switch has a built in digital volt meter/load. I hat having to hook a checker up. Is there anyway to do this with A123s? from what I read you cannot and you have to keep up with mahs used per flight.
I don't know about your switch situation, but there are issues with some chargers with Ion batt's. The newer Ion's are 3.7 per cell and have to be charged on the Lipo setting, even though your charger is Li-Ion capable. I know of several instances where this situation has burnd up a charger and Smart-fly boards. Do not charge both batteries at the same time either... That too causes the smoke to come out of stuff !!! As far as your MiliAmps per flight, once you get to know your draw per flight, you just fly X # of times and recharge. It's not like you have to check voltage/load after every flight for ever

Good luck,

Danno.

Well im my opinion, thats why my models last so long and I have never lost one due to battery issues. I keep a check on my batteries, it takes 10sec to check and can save you thousands. What if the battery was good the first flight and start dying before the 2nd?

I have two electrodynamic 123s coming in for my jet , I think because of not having to use regulator outweighs being able to load test , also you can top them off in 10 minutes at the field if you want to . just keep up with milliamps used Been using life batteries for a while and love them , don't think ill go back to ions ,although I'm using them in my 35% yak , when I change over ill get rid of the smartly also . my turbine is to big for that jet, what is he asking for it? hey dude check out this switch i am going to use. you would like it as well it keeps track of mahs used so its perfect for A123s! I am thinking about converting to them now
