Default Wren 44 Gold

What is the largest jet that you have flown with the Wren 44 Gold?

A friend loves these engines & has used them in a Colchester models A4 Skyhawk (I think that was the kit), a Falcon 120 ARF, Fivejet, Bolly Scorpion, Savex F-16 & L39 and is currently building a Renegade sport jet and an Airworld ME 262 for a pair of them as well as a couple of helicopters.

Most 91 size ducted fan models seem to suit these engines. I am converting a DF Violet F86 for the earlier Wren 44 green engine.

I suppose it depends on the weight & wing loading and the length of your runway! - John.

I have just maidened my Xtremejets Viperjet 160 (EDF/Turbine model) with the Wren 44 Gold,
the plane is quite large for this small turbine, but it flies great and is not at all underpowered.
I have made a few small adjustments, but even with 17 Lb weight, the 44 is more than enough
power.

I have 2 MW44 gold engines in my Horten. It weighs 19 Kg plus fuel and flies very well. The wingspan is 3.35m.

Well done, I always thought this would be a good combination. I really liked the take off! Immediate snap to knife edge then 1/2 roll to opposite knife edge!

Thanks, Mark - I am hoping to fly it more this weekend after modifying the nose leg
to get a slight positive angle of attack on the ground, it moves pretty well with the small
turbine!

My 82% Reaction has 1,000 square inches of 13% wing. Cooks along at 140MPH rather nicely. A perfect combination for a sport jet.

BTW, how much does the MW44 weigh? I've seen the 600grams stated on the Wren site but also 1lb-ish on a bunch of sites/forums, one is this site http://www.jethangar.com/Wren/wren.html

is 1lb the bare engine and 600grams includeing starter and FOD-guard?

I have just weighed a spare MW44 that I have and it weighs 684 gm or 1 lb 8 oz with the starter and fod guard and with the thermocouple and a kero plug.

Not my thinking at all.... loosing weight here and there might need less lead in the nose... adding up to quite a bit of a total

Dave, what is the size and weight of your 82% reaction? The reason I am asking is I have a Wren 44 ( 8 lb thrust version) that I am thinking of putting in a falcon 120.

1000 squares at 11 pounds dry. I use the 10# thrust MW44 Gold. (Measured at close to 11# early in it's life) 8# thrust would be on the low side and make for a rather boring combination. Most folks couldn't build it at 11 pounds anyway. I suggest you look elsewwhere for the 8 pounder you have.

I have a pair of the 8 pound Wren 44's.

One is in a Bobcat 50, a smaller brother of the Falcon 120 & it's a missile at full throttle.
Just like the Falcon 120 it needs a few mods for turbine use.

There's a thread for it here:

but most of the posts are for the glow engine versions. - John.

A Falcon 120 would be a dog with only 8# of thrust. It would fly the plane but wouldn't be very fast. If you search YouTube you could probably find a video of one with a Wren 44 Gold. I had a 12# Artes Bee on my first Falcon and was not happy with it, so I upgraded to a Wren Supersport. I would recommend 13# as the minimum thrust if you keep it light. 14 - 15# is about right for the plane. 18 - 20-# if you want to kick *****.

Will the wren 44 standard be a good choice for the Sting Ray from Yellow Aircraft.

The plane wheight is between 10-11 pounds.

Have read the wren 44 gold is great for this plane but not sure about the satandar wren 44.

I´m finishing this plane and for the moment is going to be electric but considering putting a turbine later.

Thanks,

Juan

I have a Yello F4 long nose that I was going to make EDF but it just looks to nice and was looking at the wrenn 44 gold. Do you guys think that this would be a good combo. The bare fuse built and painted weighs 6.5lbs. Not sure what it would be after I add servos Tam's mini retracts ect.

Thanks
Jose

Hi Jose, this combo has been tried before(June/July 2010 Rc Jet International page 42). The Phantom flew but it was underpowerer partially due to the thrust loss of the bifurcated pipe. The Wren 44 gold was replaced with a Super Bee which was the perfect combo.
