Default Spektrum Powersafe Evolution question

Hi guys,

Hope one of you boffins out there can help me with a question.

I'm fitting an Airfighter Lighting system into my JL L39 and need to find a 5.9v power supply for it, I hope to have it ready for a fly in this weekend.

There is one spare port on the 9210 evolution powerbox, bind/data. This currently has a flight log connected to it. Could I pull 5.9v off that socket without causing a bind problem to feed the lighting system or should I pull a "y" off a little used channel, say rudder?

Powerwise I am using two 5000mah nimh's for flight batteries supplying the box so I assume that I have plenty of power available.

Any advice/thoughts gratefully appreciated,

Gary.

I wouldn't use the Bind/Data socket.
You really have servos in every other socket? What current does the lighting set draw?

Hi Dave, sure you are correct on that one.
I'm pulling l/light control off spare flap output and Aux 3 on slider to control posn/acl's so all slots are occupied.
Thinking about it I reckon the sensible thing would be to y lead off Aux 3 as its used for lights anyway.

Not sure what current the whole lot is going to draw, the thing only flys for 7 minutes anyway so I would have thought 10 amp capacity would be more than enough, she only uses about 1 amp per fight total.

When I've finished wiring I'll stick a current meter on the lights and see what it draws.

Thanks for your help,
Gary.

Dave, total current draw all lights on = 2.06 amps, they won't be on all the time of course so I think it will be ok to draw from powerbox?

MMmm bit high for my liking. That's like a stalled 8711 and will cause a lot of heat through the regulator, especially with the other current drawn. My rule is that if you cannot hold a finger on the regulator heat sink after 2 minutes operation it's pulling too much.

Ok Dave, thanks for your input, I'll try that this morning, any doubt & I'll use a 4 cell nimh, better to carry more weight than lose the model
Appreciate your help,
Gary.

Dave, Just for your info I did a soak test this morning with no flight system connected and all lights full on.

I left it sitting for six minutes and the heatsink kept completely cool much to my suprise.

Having all lights on together is an unlikely scenario, I have l/lights paralleled to Aux 1 flaps so they will automatically switch off during normal flight and pos'n and a/c on rh slider so controllable, the l/lights only draw .63 amps and if I use the others they will be off so all looks good.

I'm amazed at the brilliance of the lights indoors but of course outside is a different scenario, but they do seem to bring the model to life!

Thanks again,

Gary.
