Default First turbine airframe

Do you guys think a flyeagle L-39 is going to be too much of a handful for someone who has never flown a turbine before?

I've flown large fiberglass EDF. Iconsider habu 32 a cakewalk. I run all my EDFs with an 8 second delay on the throttle to emulate a turbine lag.

I'm just curious because I would hate to waste $$ on na ugly trainer airframe but at the same time Iwant to be sucessful! But if Ihave to so be it.

Trainer airframes run 1000 to 1500 and Ican get the l-39 for aprox 2500. Iwould keep the l-39 forever so Iam trying to decide if Ican jump right to that or if its going to be a handful.

The l-39 is a trainer jet for real pilots but not sure if it is really a trainer for models.

Iam not really sure why someone would want a turbine airframe that can fly "cub speeds". Iam not trying to be a hot shot but would like to hear some different view points.

I had the exact same thoughts you are having. Jet trainers, for the most part, look terrible. I jumped into a small F-16 (Tam's with a P-60) as my first turbine. As long as you have a good, skilled, jet mentor, I wouldn't see why an L-39 couldn't be your first jet. I have been sucessful so far, and skipped the EDF portion of my training. I'm not trying to brag, just giving you my history as a bit of a guage. I say, if you have some good jet knowledge in your club, then go for it!

If you must have a scale plane, try the F-16, F-15, or the Eurosport. If scale is not the important factor driving your decision, then consider one of the Boomerang jets, Shockjet, or the Reaction.

Good luck with your decision.

The flying characteristics of the trainers are only a small factor. Trainers are designed to handle leaking gas or kero in a more safe way then a scale airplane do. For practicing turbine starting it is very convenient to have hotstarts or random fire outside the fuselage rather then filling up a 10gallon propane bomb :-)

F15 or MB339 would also be suitable

I don't know much about the Flyeagle L39 but I've seen several Jetlegend L39's and, although I've never flown one, they look very easy to fly and I think it would be fine.

My first jet was a little Savex L39 so it can be done

I got into jets in 92, turbines the last 8 yrs of that and have flown just about everything out there form a turbine glider to a heavy metal F4 and i still own 'trainer' airframes, they are an absolute ball to fly so don't limit your ability to have FUN just because it's not a scale airframe.

Trainer airframes run 1000 to 1500 and I can get the l-39 for aprox 2500.
Another airplane to consider is the Modellbau F-86D. While it is not 100% scale, it looks nice, has a great envelope and is gentle enough to act as a trainer, and with the K-80- spirited enough to let it really rip.
With pipe and gear around $ 1000, with engine less than $ 3000.
Worth thinking about in my book, it is a lot of fun to fly.

16s fly like a baby, they are a good choice for first scale jets.

was it a new honeycomb version or an old style? i sold both my FEJ 1/8th F-16 advance versions, for less then that, one of them was NIB the other had some nose rash from the gear collapsing on EVERY landing, was thankful to have recovered what little bit i did on the sale.

fiberglass version, and the one that crashed is worth 0

the one nib is worth a lot less if it was v1.  This is v2.  1500 with a 350 light system nib is a bad deal?  From my understanding v2 advanced has that issue resolved.

gear collapsing is not a crash, it simply scratches hell out of the bottom of the nose.

It sounds like that problem has been resolved in the past couple years.  I wish I would of known you were selling a new one in box for less than 1500, I would of jumped on it!

their new gear seams to be vastly improved. FenderBean's 1/6th scale looks and works great and held up to his not so perfect landing on it's maiden flight.

Is it normal for one aileron to not be flush with fuse when flush with wing and vice versa?

Yea Bean, It looked like it held up very well from the landing... Does it still work properly ?? Nothing bent, binding or leaking ??

Works fine I tested the gear afterward and no issues with it, the gear has a support that over extends which takes the load some. If the weather would every clear up and stop being so windy. The fail this year is crazy never seen it get cold and windy this early and last this long.

Flies like a tame pattern plane, it's a floater and lands a lot slower than expected. If your seasoned in rc and flown larger planes you should be fine, but don't take my word for it Im new to turbines. I'm looking forward to my next build thread, learned a lot with this one and the next will be even better.
