Default Hitec 5645 on F-16 1/8 stabs??

Can someone who has flown a F-16 1/8 scale let me know what servos you were using on the stabs.

I have some 5645's that are rated at 168 oz at 6 volts. Has anybody used these on an F-16 of this size?

Thanks, Gary

JR 8411s worked on my old one, they are only rated at 155oz. the 5645s i've never liked the hunting at center but it should work for you and not be a major issue.

Gary,

I used 7985's in my Cermark. They have similar torque as the 5645's but the the 7985's have the coreless motor.

Used 7954SH's in my Skymaster. Way overkill I'm sure.

Ive used servos in the 110~155 in-oz range as I dont like overkill. On Tams I used 9411's. I am typically a Hitec user, but I only use 5645's for flaps because their centering suck! However the F-16 has so much slop already built into the elevators that centering would not be that critical.

I say go for it!

Curious, why you "don't like overkill" in this case? Weight is not really an issue here, neither is servo speed, power consumption or even cost. What's the preference for a lower margin in-oz servo?

I'm glad you ask. I keep my airframes extremely light. For Rx power, I typically use one 2300 A123 battery, no back up, no redundancy. I try keeping the servo size to what is absolutely necessary, and avoid unnecessary battery drain.

For 1/8th F-16's I've been using a JC Rabbit (small diameter, lightweight). My SM F-16 was probably 19-20 lbs dry (vs some as heavy as 27 lbs!). The performance was flawless, good speed, good climb and because of the light wing loading - it could land at a walking pace. I can typically get 4-5 flights out of a sinlge charge also.

It may not be a weight issue if you focus only on two servos. I focus on all servos. I fly all my models like this and have never lost one because of lack of redundancy, loss of power, or servo failure. I truly follow the KISS philosophy on my models. My target has always been minimizing weight,

I flew 6 flights on 5645's in my 1/8 16 before changing to 5955's. I noticed a lot less trimming was necessary after the switch.

Same thing here, on 5645 the F-16 was always searching...
change to 5955 and it was a huge diffrence, rock stable.
its not the torque thats a problem on this servo , its the centering !

I would not use these. They don not center. Bad pots

David,
Got it. Thanks. I plan to do the same on my next F-16 as my SM came in at 24lbs before fuel. Still think I'll make an exception on the stab servos though.

Mike
