JL F-22 Assembly, Winter 2011
Well its a deep subject. Christmas came early and Santa was dressed in his DHL outfit. I wish to preface this by saying that I'm not a company rep for anyone. I simply wish to share this project and exchange information with all of you.
These jets were ordered approximately 30 days ago. Ordered through Camlex Enterprises from Clackamas, Oregon. Prior to pulling the trigger I probably exchanged 50 emails discussing options. I ordered ARF's in factory "Paint in the mold" schemes. The only exception was I asked for a "2" on the tail of the Phantom. Normally its a 7. This was done for me at no charge by Jet Legend.
I also opted to delete the JL pipes and all air cylinders for the gear doors. I wanted to hinge all my own doors with stronger hinges.
I ordered the cockpits with Camlex also. I got the Camlex ICON series cockpits specifically for these birds. Camlex had the Thunderbird pilots helmets customized with my dads name and mine. Both helmets also have the callsign's on the back just as the full scale guys have. The pilot in the F-22 has an arm that will wave at you and his head can also turn left and right independant of the arm movement. This will kill two chanels but should look cool in HD on the taxi out.
The landing gear was left uninstalled as I'm sending both sets of gear to Down and Locked Tuesday. The only air system on these airplanes will be the brakes. Wish someone made a good electric brake for these as well but for now the F-4 will get a new UP-6 and the F-22 is getting a recycled BVM ST2 valve that was in the used parts bin.
All servos are Hitec 7955TG's except for rudders and ailerons on the 22. The rudders MUST have jr8411's or thinner body servos. High torque is a must as there have been MANY airframes lost due what is suspected to be rudder flutter at high speed. All the servo hatch covers are molded and the ailerons are sized for Hitec 225MG's or similar sized servos. I will be using Hitec 5245MG's. Digital Hitecs are great because you can program the center and end points and use a simple y-harness to port them into one chanel.
Power will be dual Li-ion packs to a Powerbox regulated switch into dual 6014 recievers then to the Powerbox RRS module and out to the servos. All servo extensions will be custom made to proper length.
The boxes arrived in great shape and the birds are both in perfect shape. Not even one ding or scratch. Everything was packed extremely well and again, DHL....I'm very impressed with their service. Here's some pics of the days unpacking.

Congrats,
Very nice indeed, if I where you I would separate this thread in two, one for the F-4 and another for the F-22, any way I would be following your F-4 build closly, keep it up and enjoy the buiding.

Wow, what a lucky man you are!
I knocked up a JL L39 last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.
If your pair fly anywhere as well as mine you have some real fun to look forward to.

Be aware that unless the gear is accurately assembled and aligned in the airframe, the geometry of the retract linkage imposes quite a load on the operating mechanism. sufficient in my example to cause blow by of one of the piston seals because of the extreme pressure required. Jeff Sewell the UK rep was a great help with this. I look forward to your progress. Ron.

Shipped F-22 Gear today to Down and Locked. Spoke with Mitch on the phone and was very informative. I'm going to use their sequencer as well. www.DownAndLocked.com

Good luck on the build Jason!!! I'll be following along on your thread and checking out the improvements you have made!! Hopefully next year we'll get a chance to fly them together. What cockpit and pilot did you put in yours?

Hi ya MugenKid, its gonna be a blast to have both these birds up together. The Cockpit is from Camlex Enterprises and is the Camlex ICON series. I had them add the extra feature of making the pilots head turn and his left arm wave. Heres some pics of it.

The shop is now good enough to start working. Wings will be first. Get the flaps and ailerons hinged, servos installed. My dad made a plate today to mount the servos for the pilots arm and head.
I'm going to get an empty weight on the airplane and will post it next.

After installing mine, I noticed that during retraction, the air cylinder can move a few mm and midway through the retraction can come into contact with the wooden plate the gear is mounted against. Filing away a bit of the wood next to the cylinder completely solved that problem. After that, my gear seems to operate just fine, even at lower psi.
Have you noticed the same on yours? It's best to try by moving the gear by hand (without air pressure) and make sure the gear doesn't come into contact with the plate midway during the cycle.

A couple of pics. Mine is EDF (twin Tamjets TJ-100 on 2 X 12S 5000mah) and flies great! Have ~10 flights on it now. This really is the easiest flying jet I've owned so far!
