What the heck happened?? Looked like some pretty extreme maneuvers for that big bird. On purpose or control system problems?

RIP.

Well, i cant tell you exactly what happened, as i have been to the privileged safety brief- but lets just say the crew took their -1 flight manual and "through it out the window". The aircraft was pushed beyond limits...

The C17 is a pretty agile aircraft for its size I have seen it make similar maneuvers at airshows, Infact it has performed at the Riverside Ca airshow for
the last 6or 7 years.

Oh a happier note, here is the Paris Airshow vid of the C-130J. It's pretty impressive, the flying and how they made the vid.

Watching the video, I kept thinking they must have had to drug the co-pilot...he seemed as calm as a cucumber through the entire sequence...LOL

Pretty big control deflections in that one...we fly with little movements of our fingertips...that C-130 was flown like the bumpy cars in the amusement park...

Do you think things were "good" at anytime during that video of the C-130 LOL Nice video but I had to turn the volume off after a while[:@]
Interesting that such a spirited display with an aircraft of that size is done is such a location. I have no idea how near its limits that Hurc was, but as an uneducated guess I would say it was in the upper reaches. With that in mind, there looked to be very little margin in the surrounding area if things were to go wrong. As the C-17 video demonstrated, just because they are full size and worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and flown by " the worlds finest" to doesn't mean that things don't go wrong. Now imagine that C-17 mess up, but in the Hurc videos location

Hi Ali

Your point about the location is well made. Sadly, for full size displays the airfields are often surrounded by built up areas. The two biggest airshows in Europe - Farnborough and Paris - are a case in point! They are both surrounded by huge built up areas. Full size display flying is very tightly regulated for safety reasons these days, but in that location if the C130 had done the same as the C17, the consequences are not worth contemplating. The pilot certainly loved his 'looking good' expression! I guess we all pick up little sayings as we go along - one of mine, wierdly, is to start any radio transmission with the word 'and'! I have no idea why, but I do it almost every time, unless I think about it!

Regarding the comment about 'worlds finest', they were both trucky pilots, and as such not good enough to be fast jet pilots! Everyone knows that the 'worlds finest' are single seat fast jet pilots, and all others are merely 'also rans'! (where is the devils horns smiley when you need it!)

Yes, sad indeed. The report on this one is very detailed, too bad we dont see more of that in NTSB reports.

"MAs configuration was full right rudder, aft control stick and slat retracting" - which raises the stall speed. Skidding while stalled is bad news. Sadly it's also a contributor to many GA accidents in the pattern, typically in the turn from an over-extended base leg to final during runway alignment.
