Default Fire extinguishers.

I currently haul a modertaly large/heavy c02 extiungisher to the field when flying my jets. It is approx 17" tall 5" wide and weights 13.5 lbs. I am curious what everybody else is using, especially the ones that might be smaller and lighter.

Mine is 26 lbs and measures about 17.5 x 6.5 inches.
I have noticed that the guys in europe have a smaller size, I jsut have not seen those here in the USA.

I just checked mine, it is 5.5" dia x 13" tall and weighs 16.8lbs. I don't think it has lost any weight since I had it recharged about 2yrs ago.

My 13" tall is just the tank, does not include the valves. When I used it on a turbine crash is was barely enough to contain the fire until the back pack water tanks got there. I think it is very adequate for a pit fire.

Our club insist that every pilot has a Co2 extinguisher for dealing with start up issues, but we provide a few club ones too. However we have invested in a number of foam Ones and these perform really wel on fuel fire following a crash.. C02 doesn't really hack it with a fuel fire and if there is a breeze they are hopeless.
Foam is a good investment for a club, and have them sat in a car wit the keys in the ignituion ready to go at a moments notice.

I cannot speak for every country's standard but in Oz the empty & full weights are stamped on the extinguisher.
Just weigh the extinguisher & compare it to those figures.

Same with a BBQ gas bottle, no figures stamped on it but weigh the bottle. Mine is a 9KG cylinder but the weights are
a bit confusing. It weights 9KG empty & 18 KG full.

I use a big extinguisher like turnnburn but made a wheeled stand to make it a little easier to move around. John.

I have a 10 lb CO2 extinguisher for start up fires and a 5 gallon Indian that we use for fuel fires at crash locations. I hope this helps.

Everyone does know that water is not appropriate for a gasoline, jet fuel or kero fire? It can spread it and make things worse.
You need the BC rated to put out the liquid part of the fire and the water to put out the grass fire that was started.

The indian is used to control the fire in the event of a crash from spreading only! We use the co2 for all others. I also have a ABC one incase the pit area fire gets out of control.

I have a 10 LB CO2 for startup fires and I also keep a small foam one with me at all times for the a crash/fuel fire.
We had a turbine crash last year and we used up two 10Lb CO2 extinguishers and it did absolutely nothing to the fire.
Someone came running out with a tiny foam one and One 3 second burst is all it took to put out the entire fire.

Does the AMA require a certain minimum size Co2 extinguisher ? I would like to get the smallest one required I think. What is the correct or technical name for a "foam" extinguisher ? Sounds like a good thing to have in addition to the co2 and water one.
