Default Hobbyking BD5 for Jetcat P20

I'm thinking of moving one of my P20s into a new model and have been looking at available options.

Has anyone got one of the Hobbyking BD-5s in their hands? Does it look like it might work with a P20 or is it too big/heavy?

I was looking at that the other day. I was thinking Wren 44... but I'm sure it will fly on a P20.

I have both the Kit and the P20. The fuse is pretty large, I think it will fly. But it wont be overpowered. My fuse came with damage. It is a heavier layup than the CMP small stuff. I wonder if a P60 would be a better choice. Or the small wren would be perfect.

First pic is with a P100-RX, the P-20 is on that small falcon. you have to look to see it.

I would think that the P20 would be ideal. The Hobbyking L59 which I am doing with P20 is also an excellent choice

Hobby King L-59 I also have, made by CMP, is Very Light the fuse on the BD-5 is large enough to fit a p-160 in it. However, Not a good idea. the BD is a heavy layup Great for turbine aircraft, but will be marginal with a P-20. Im eventually give it a try Ill let you know. maybe leave off the retracts for weight...

Good luck getting service on that damaged part from HK...

Keep in mind that the P-60 weighs a ton when the fuel required is factored in, as it has just about the worst fuel burn per pound of thrust in the industry. You may be much better off with the W-44.

Thanks for the info.

From the specs listed on the websites, the BD-5 has less wing area than the Habu 32 so I'm not sure it would be much fun with the weight of a Wren 44 or P60.

If the layup is a bit heavy for the P20 then I'll give it a miss, which is a shame as it looks quite good.

I might have to get my Jet Teng Hawk out of it's box instead

Tim never even thought of a turbine in the L-39, sounds great and the kits a good price. How far have you gone with the build?

My buddy has this plane.. First thing I thought was...What an excellent candidate for a p-20. The P-20 is small enough and light enough to over come the weight of fuel with ease. The 90mm Motor/fan must weight close to 2lbs not forget the esc and oh yeah! the 3 or 4lbs of batteries. Keeping it light will be the best solution as always..but I think this plane could handle a few extra grams with electric gear. Dont worry about the wings, there not scale. They were designed to make this plane fly.

Having said all that... The HK L-59 is the Best 90mm EDF I have ever flown. Put a p20 in that puppy and you will be one happy camper.

Im actually looking for a Wren 44 gold to install in mine.

I have a damaged L59 fuselage too, and yes HK are crap at sorting out a replacement - been months with the same old standard email from some electronic computer trying to be a human dishing out BS all day long - furious and NEVER dealing with them ever again.

Are you basing that comment on the quality of the yet to be realeased item
or the quality of the people buying them?

Well I for sure aint buying any HK turbine regardless of the outcome as to its abilities, once you experience the service first hand you realise that cheap is for a good reason!

No ,On the track record of past customer service???? and threads on several boards...
I love their Products, I know how to get them to work.
Their Foam Cessna 310 is my favorite model I have ever had. Even though I have had to replace the motors 3 times. and Heck the motors were only 4 bucks.

Anybody with a P20 would be spoiled for choice at HobbyKing there are loads of EDF's suitable, pity they would'nt just increase the size of a few to suit a P60

We had a Skymaster/Exteme jets BD with a P-60 in it and it had plenty of go. If it wasn't for my hate for Hobby King and alike I might have thought about one.

Dave is it better not to fight the competition rather than hate them!
Hate is such a negative emotion.

Every one of these HobbyKing jets is of really poor quality, and really poorly tested, if they are tested at all.  Few of them fly well.  None of them build well.  The list of complaints about these planes is really long.  People buy them because they are cheap, but very few of these planes actually get more than a handful of flights, if any at all. Not really a bargain in the end.  You take a big risk when you put a $3000 turbine in one, that's for sure.
Try Eflight or another better quality brand.
Some of these can be made to work, if you know what you are doing, but you are the beta tester for sure.
The factory that made most of these, Prodesign, shut down and the owner made off with all the money, that's why many of them are permanently out of stock.

Hi phill thats true! I looked at eflite aswel i have had sevral habu jets with p20s they do fly very well!! But eflite just does not have enuff to offer you when it gets to sticking turbines in and doing conversions"
I looked at the phantom it just wasnt my type of jet! Hobby king have so many edf 90mm fan jets that are perfect to convert to turbine power and most of them sell like hot cakes thats y ther always out off stock! Lol!
However iv had a hobby king g500 gulf stream must say it flew very well but like you say you have to build them tuff and solid"
Iv not flown this bd5 yet! But hope to fly it soon its 95% done just few minor things to sort out such as control hinjs the ones hobby king supplyd were not good other then this c of g! Ther was no manual in the box so iv decided to ballance it on 3rd wing from leading edge this is just on the main wing spar were the fuel tank sits.
