FEJ: 1/6 F-18 Twin Turbine Thread
Since the other thread went way off course, I'm starting a new thread. Please no comments about AMA, or waivers, or how advanced, or certification... they can be addressed at the when they are needed.
My F-18 Twin:
Diamond Back Scheme
Factory Installed Light Kit including scale lights on the aileron covers
Standard version with Manual canopy (not air operated)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHyuI...ature=youtu.be
Servos:
4 x HS-7950 Servos used on flaps & rudders (Speed set to 36 to match the HS-7980)
4 x HS-7980 Servos on Elevators and Ailerons.
1 x 7955 for Nose Steering (may change this to a Hs-7950 depending on the performance)
Hitec servos are great and include a blue aluminum arm that can be used on everything except may the flaps, for that you may need a 1" SWB arm. the HS-7980 is a hauss of a servo making 611 torque, this will be needed as the latest generation of the F-18 only uses 1 servo/elevator and 1 servo/aileron.
Servo hardware:
50 Ft spool of twisted wire form Servocity for making custom extensions: http://www.servocity.com/html/servo_wire__bulk_.html
30 Meters of Servo wire mesh from Hobby King: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...6mm_1mtr_.html

Pilots:
2 1/6 scale pilots I got fro ebay, total cost was $115.00 shipped, they are pretty good and have a lot of accessories.

Engines:
Dual Kintech 170G turbines, to be run on Diesel from day 1 with Kingtech Turbine oil, combined output of 74lbs of thrust (37lbs each)
10 ft of 4mm Tubing from dreamworks rc: http://dreamworksrc.com/catalog/fest...ear-p-717.html
4mm clips to route cables: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._OD_10pc_.html
Air Traps: http://dreamworksrc.com/catalog/gbrj...ml-p-1970.html (x 2)
Festo Hardware from DreamworksRc
Retracts, possible Hydraulic conversion for BOTH the retracts and the rams:

If not than $750 down and locked conversion, people that have this jet seem to raise concern over the stock air retracts so this is something that would need to be addressed.

I haven't decided on the power controller, I'm leaning towards the Powerbox Cockpit SRS: http://www.powerbox-systems.com/e/po...-srs/start.php
and 2x Futaba Sbus Servos: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBPKP&P=3
Guidance will be provided with a futaba 18mz.

RE: FEJ: 1/6 F-18 Twin Turbine Thread
My jet arrived, but there were some damages, not major but it will be 1-2 weeks before they are fixed, until then the build will be on hold.
Issues:
1, No Horns included with the hit or on the flaps, so Installing servos is on hold.
2, Flaps didn't have the cut-out or the horn, FEJ is supposed to be sending these
3, Missing light controller, was in the video, but not included.
4, Paint on the covers doesn't really match the plane
Pros:
Light kit install overall was pretty nice and only $295.00
Weathering on the plane was provided at no charge.

More pics, note: the air brake was supposed to be installed, but broke off during transit, so I'm wondering how strong the glue is on the rest of the plane.
In case people are wondering of the cost mine was right at about 6.2k without the ordinance kit but with 2 wing tip missiles.

yeah kingtech has a some new airtraps coming out for just $40.00 I think they are made form air power but they are the flexible kind. People have said the soft tanks don't do well on high power turbines. I have about 4 of these, you can't service them but they should last for years and years.

I've never had a problem with UATs, but I'm using CATs in 3 planes (2 twins)... I like that they can be mounted horizontally and are completely enclosed.

RE: FEJ: 1/6 F-18 Twin Turbine Thread
currently repairing the fuse cracks using stuff from a body shop to fiberglass the inside, Fly Eagle Jet sent over the matching paints with the thinner so hopefully by the end of the week I"ll have it finished.
I'm really considering doing this hydrolic conversion it seems cheap and straight forward and should add some more power to the retracts.

RE: FEJ: 1/6 F-18 Twin Turbine Thread
I got a question fro X3dflyer:
Ok my reasoning for this is, I don't see my self deploying flaps at high speeds, I just need a servo without enough power to keep them in place the 7950 puts out at least the same amount as 8711 so I should be good in that regard, these servos I will only slow down for my own taste not really needed.
For the Rudder, I went with the 7950 because they are 2 servos 1 for each rudder and I don't think you need that much, you could possibly go with 2x 7980s on the rudder also, I might do this too... But even the original F-18 which was much heavier only had a provision for 1 servo/rudder and it flew fine I don't think the F-18 does knife Edge all that well so I don't see my self using rudder on anything else but landings and may be on slow turns. I will probably program the 7950s to match the speed of the 7980s just keep the surfaces moving the same speed, I'm sure this doens't really make any difference and is just something I want to do for the sake of doing it.
The elevators and ailerons are the surfaces that need the most power hence the 7980's for them 611 should be enough.
Will counter balance the elevators when I get home, I got a bag of Steel power from the classifieds, I'll mix this up in a paste with some 30 min epoxy and inject it into the tip of the elevators, should only need about 5 oz / elevator to counter balance.
why not 7980's on all surfaces to keep it simple?
what made you pick the 7950's if you need to slow then down?
I need to start buying my electronics now so I am getting ready to buy servos...I will be buying kingtech k160's and also using the CAT uat's as Rex had suggested

RE: FEJ: 1/6 F-18 Twin Turbine Thread
So today I counter balanced the elevators, I have talked with Rex and he said to definatley do this. Although his method is different than mine both achieve the same result.
I got some STEEL Power off the rcu classifieds and used it as my weights.
Here is what I did:
Step 1: drill out a 5/16th hole in the stabs.
Step 2: Pour some of the steel power into a mixing cup, I used 50% steel power and 50% epoxy. It took 2.5 cups full of this mixture to balance each of my stabs. I used 15 min epoxy for this and also used some denature alcohol to thin the mixture.
Step 3: Pour the mixture into hole with the stab pointing down, leave the stab and let it dry.
Step 4: After 15 mins hold and test the stab in your hand to see if it is relatively balanced, it doesn't have to be perfect just close enough.
Step 5: Once its balanced its now time to fill up that hole you made
Step 6: I used BVM milled fiber and 15 min epoxy to make a very thick filler, it was about 2/3 bvm milled fiber 1/3 epoxy. This makes a great filler and is easy to sand.
Step 7: Fill in your hole and let it dry
Step 8: Sand the whole thing smooth and use some of the paint that came with your kit to cover the hole.
Step 9: balanced stabs! Servos should not have to work as hard keep the plane level.[8D]

Yeah I'm not happy with the factory, still haven't gotten my HORNS for the flaps I wanted to start on the wings but can't until they send me the horns for the flaps...
