Default Experimental aircraft question...

Guys,

To settle a few different answers I have heard, what is the procedure for flying a new, un-certified experimental jet at an AMA event?

Must it be flow, proven and signed off before the show?

Can you maiden it at the show after it passes inspection and get it signed off if you complete the required test flights?

It seems that when you ask, you get different answers.

Thanks,

Beave

The plane and pilot should be proven before an event. You really don't want to have a crowd around while you test fly a LGA. When you flight test a LGA you are inspecting the pilots ability as much as you are the aircraft.

Since self inspections are allowed on aircraft below 35kg(aprox 77lbs), there are not many LGA that require an inspector anymore.

Tony,

Should...or must? There is a big difference between those two words.

Thanks,

The test flights to obtain an AMA permit To Fly must be observed & signed off by either a Turbine CD, LMAI or LM or combination of the above.

If at an event it is the CD's call, if he will allow the test flights just prior to the event. An LTMA not in possesion of a Permit To Fly is not allowed to fly at any AMA sanctioned event.

A Maiden flight is by definition a test flight. In order to do that test flight you need a Temporary Permit to Fly which requires the presence and sign off of a CD OR LM. after successful completion of the required two test flights you would be issued your Permit To Fly which would allow the aircraft to be flown at the event.

I didn't mean that they didn't need to be signed off, just that an INSPECTOR is not required.

Boli, I meant "SHOULD" (personal opinion). Not Must.

You MUST have PERMIT TO FLY document signed off ,valid dated and presentable to the CD to fly...Inspecting and test flying airplanes of this weight in either catagory is not advisable at an event . I doubt there would be any CD wanting testing of an unproven aircraft going on at their "Target Rich environment ". It is there call..... I personally might start the visual inspection (Inspector required weigh limit .. it is time consuming to do it right) but NOT the flight tests.

I have had PILOT waiver sign offs at events.Usually after regular event flying .But Not PLANES.

David is on the mark

According to the safety code, no model aircraft should be maidened during a sanctioned event. So it should not be the CDs call to allow any maiden during an event, not just large jets.

3. Model aircraft will not be flown in AMA sanctioned events, air shows or model demonstrations unless:
(a) The aircraft, control system and pilot skills have successfully demonstrated all maneuvers intended or anticipated prior to the specific event.

I think what David was referring to was before or after event hours flying, not during the event. I can't imagine any CD allowing this kind of a flight DURING the event.

Mark, read the bold print of my statement. "prior" as in before, not during.

Yes David, but the question was if the model could be maidened "at" an event. Hence my bolding of "during". My point was that this goes for any model and not just an experimental jet.

Also "At" an event could be interpreted as either during the event or before or after event hours. I'm sure everyone has seen new planes maidened at events. The question is if this was done during the actual time(s) designated on the sanction.
