Default Yellow Aircraft F-18 "twin"

I decided to start my own thread on the yellow f-18 "twin" as the old thread was well.. old . I just picked up a yellow f-18 which is only a year and a half old in a deal and i wanted to learn a little more about it before i moved forward on finishing it. most of the work is done except for cutting the rudders , flaps and Ailerons out of the main parts. I've never flown anything this scale as far as jets goes. my experience level is as follows. I've flown giant scale warbirds for years and my first jet was a AV8R then onto a intro for the past 6 years. After looking around i see a wide spectrum of power options being used in this bird from DF glow to EDF to huge turbines. My thought process was if i keep it light and use a 140 now only would it fly lighter ,but the landings would be better. I don't need a fancy cockpit, lights etc. just a nice flying plane. i see that the spar mods have been done and most of the former's have lightening holes drilled to help shed some weight . My understanding is that this is the best flying hornet out there to date. i've seen a lot of SM etc f-18's fly and they looked like bricks. So i'd like to start a conversation about this plane as to get a better understanding of them . Thanks, WB_1

Looks like a lot of the hard stuff is done. I just finished the flaps and ailerons on mine. Will you be using the single intake? You may not be able to get it in now though. I think the 140 will fly it but you will have to watch the weight. Performance may be down a little but once you get her up and moving you should be ok. Will likely have the left stick pegged a lot of the flight.
I'm not putting many bells and whistles on mine either. I will be using an old school airstart amt 450.

I have tons of flights on yellow Twin 18's and they are the best flying F18 period. You are correct to keep it light if you want to use the 140. It will fly but wont be overpowered. I have flown on Twin AMT 180's Single AMT 450 Twin K80 and now Twin K100 my current hornet with Single K210 in the works with new composite wings

Good luck with your build

Seems like a good challenge. Use monokote on the wings/fins/elevators , and don't use a bifurcated pipe to keep the optimum thrust. Have a look at Grumania's website, they have a Eurofighter with straight pipe design and the scale look is preserved.

Keep the pictures coming

I have always wanted to try one of these kits, I just wish you could get one in a dual seat version thats not a super hornet. I like the fact B1 is making composite wing molds, since I hate dealing with the stock type of wings. Good luck on the build, glad to see someone building on here I down time and nothing much to do.

good point on the pipe. though i don't like the looks , i can see where they could preserve the thrust. i''ll give that a good look as long as i don't have to hack up the plane to use it. i wonder how much thrust you lose on a b-pipe over a straight pipe....

no can do on the b-pipe. i might have to consider a larger engine. which means higher fuel load . :-(

Bob is making them for me. I contracted him to make the molds and first set it out of molds. Should be ready soon

he's the only one right ? i wonder what the weight of them will be. i weighted the raw yellow wing .. no work done and they came in a 1.18 lbs. each. i didn't think that was bad. I saw bob's videos and those wings are really nice.

You will save 1 pound on the composite wings over stock ones and since this is mostly behind the cg it will eliminate some nose lead as well

Hey Kevin,

the video of the composites looks amazing, really swell job. How are things coming with fins and stabs? And any word out about pricing?

Btw., the hydraulic shock absorbers are under construction by me. Was severely sick the last weeks, but am getting better and will return to getting first parts made soon.

Best regards
Hank

Default Part Number

Just wondering with your build do you have a part number for the elevator clamping clevis on the elevator rod. As I have a friend who has the kit but doesn't have the clamping clevis on the elevator rod in his purchase.

Maybe he will be able to order the part.

Barry

He produced three sets of wings. They are flying on the one I sold to Robert B. The other sets went to Chris Hogg for his and one set went to one sold to Twan,

The wings fly very well and look great
