Default Stepping back in time

I crawled up in my attic and pulled down a Jet Model Products Starfire IIb kit. I decided to build it for my grandson who thinks he is ready for jets. He may be ready, but grandpa isn't. So I built it with an OS .91VRDF with a JMP System II pipe in a Dynamax fan. I installed some Spring Air retracts I had lying around (from a crashed Yellow Aircraft Starfire...don't ask).

Great aeroplane Gary. I've had 2 0f them and have some shells tucked away in my loft. No worries with the power package. Set up perfectly it is very fast. Enjoy.

Thanks guys.

This was my third JMP Starfire build. I had quite a bit of success with them back in the early to mid '90s. I also have a JMP F-4 Phantom kit with the retracts along with 2 more brand new OS .91s and JMP system II pipes. Just might be my next build.

That is the coolest thing I have seen on RCU in ages.. A genuine Retro jet..

Hats off to you for not being tempted into EFD or a mini turbine..

ICDFs ROCK..

I agree, very cool. And a complete build! I remember when everyone who wanted to fly glassed their surfaces and painted. boy that seems like a million years ago.

What did you use to put down the glass BTW? My favorite was always K&B superpoxy satin clear paint.

Kindred spirits!! I have a JMP F4 now using a tjt turbine, flies regularly, another great plane. Ron. p.s. a bit of a tight squeeze for the 2 fans.

He did great, Buck. He's already had his first problem......throttle arm came loose just enough that he lost throttle control. (the one thing I forgot to loktite) He got it down without tearing it all up, which is better than I could have probably done.

I used thinned West Systems epoxy put down with a foam paint roller. Nothing I have found works as nice as K&B clear with the satin catalyst.

Boy you said it....butter. So easy to sand. I am glassing a reaction 54 with West Systems. Nice stuff but hard as nails. I don't sand it, I scrape it with single edge razor blades. Much faster.

I heard Klasskote is like superpoxy maybe I will try some satin clear again. I heard the old stuff was reformulated aircraft epoxy paint (to make it 50/50 mix) who knows.

I used Klasskote to clear over latex on my giant turbinator. It must be thinned quite a bit to spray. Not the same stuff as the K&B.
