Default Craftsman 19.2v LiIon battery

Gonna buy one of these today for the cordless air compressor. but I'm not a big fan of the charger Sears sells. Has anyone been able to charge this with a HiTec charger? Any special plug required?

Thanks,
David

I've done it, in a pinch at the field. Dremeled a slot over torx, open the case, soldered a 16 ga pig tail to Deans, snip off a little opening for the pigtail, now the pack could be charged both ways.

Cheers,
Barry

I only did that because I wanted to fly so bad that day, especially I had the jet all prepped and ready to go and only to find my compressor batt was out.

I would also suggest not to rely on field chargers to quick charge, that you only dump in say up to 70% of the total capacity to get you through the day and still use the original charger whenever you can for the sake of longevity of the pack.

Thanks,
Barry

That is awesome Barry. I will try it. Not looking to fast charge really, but using a my charger has more flexibility, and I can check how the battery os degrading over time.

Cool. I put a deans on it. It says 19.2 but I assume 18V is correct. It is a 5S battery.
Ahh....marketing!

If it's a 5s then a fully charged lithium-ion can go up to 4.2 volts per cell giving it 21 volts fully charged.....lithium ion drop to 3.9 pretty fast coming off the charger (19.5v for 5s) unlike a lipo that just stays at 4.2 off the charger

it may be that they set the charger to only go to 19.2 fully charge to extend battery life? It would be interesting to see what they set the cut off voltage too, would also be interesting to see if there charger does some sort of balance charge? I guess the load is pretty light so probably not... I have the same hand compressor this will be a nice upgrade and my old pack is getting tired, barely makes it through a day on a charge now

Mike, I used to the tab on the upper left and the lower right of your picture, and bypassed the FuFu circuit board (not sure what it does!!). Drilled a hole on the upper cover for the lead to exit. Came out pretty neat.
Ill post some pics tomorrow.

Ron, you are absolutely right. As I was charging the voltage would reach 21V and then drop to 18.5

These look like LiOn though, and most should have a nominal of 3.6 which peaks at 4.1.
Don't know what logic behind Craftsman but how about (3.6+4.1)/2*5=19.25 or 19.2v, probably concurs with Ron's idea of pack preservation

The way that board is wired it may handle the balance charge or low voltage cut...maybe both. Not sure I would bypass

I bypass only for charging Ron. You may be right its a balancing circuit, and may reduce the life of the battery. In any case, as soon as the pack goes bad I will replace with a higher capacity one. I really only wanted the battery housing and connector.
