Uglier airplanes have been reported, but not by reliable witnesses. Glad the pilot was OK.

Wonder how they jettisoned the external fuel tanks on the upper part of the wings when they needed too?

They were only intended as ferry tanks to allow deployment to far away places where they would be removed after arriving, they were never meant to be fitted for normal or combat use though there were explosive bolts to allow them to be ejected in an emergency. They were hardly ever fitted, few people have ever seen a Lightning fly with them.
