That's so funny Danno! My Dad sent me this too and asked the EXACT same question when I told them they were RV's...
I think they were RV-8's (or most of them were)... https://www.vansaircraft.com/public/rv8.htm

article stated it was R.C models from an R/C club from Kansas City:

This video is remarkable. How they worked it out with Homeland Security, FAA and all the other government protectors is remarkable. These are radio-controlled MODEL airplanes. No small feat! The budget cuts have eliminated military flyovers at large events. But, there's a group of guys in Kansas City who do formation-flying on their own who decided to pick up the slack. They invited a couple of other groups to join them for with 48 guys using their homemade RC airplanes. If they had more time, they probably would have an even larger group as people kept joining; they had a 49th added near the event. One additional feature of the flyover was the use of pink smoke for cancer awareness. [/TD]

Speakers on and best watched at 'full screen'. Click below, and hope you enjoy this short video.

If you don't care about RV's, you should. Don't know what you are missing! I've been flying RC since age 8 in the early 80's but I think the RV series of airplanes are the cat's meow. Fly many, and fly often Preferably the RV-4 and RV-8. If your colleague has an RV4 and he sent that to you he is pimping you for sure. Anyone with an RV of any series knows about that flyover.
