That was before the sun was fully up…I’m sure it topped 3 degrees in the end 😁
Only had three flights on the Mig, but one of my guys did 7 flights with his Rebel 2m!
There was no wind, so didn’t feel cold.

Couple of things I realised are important info after watching Jonathan’s video.
The rear of the cockpit tub needs sanding/notching on the back wall of the tub to allow it to lift so the rail grooves to be parallel to the fuselage hatch frame. This fuselage frame lip also needs trimming to 10mm wide (back of mine ended up a fraction less so that the opening is equal in width all the way front to back. The back leg Jonathan almost completely removed should be sanded to 5mm across its width. The cockpit tub then sits hard against this setting it’s position.

Lip going across cockpit 5mm wide

Rail needs to be parallel to the canopy lip. You can see on the right the tub has been sanded.

Took the might Mig to a local scale day. Used it to experiment with landing as it was a cross wind and quite thermally. Added 1/4” CROW for the landing with Flaps and it stops some of the “walking” swept wing jets can do.

Default MiG-17 Maiden

After many countless hours off and on I finally made the first flights on my MiG-17 today. Three near trouble-free early morning flights off the dry lakebed before the summer heat came on. Very pleased with the jet as it only required a couple clicks of elevator trim. Although it balanced at the 28.5cm mark it showed to be nose heavy in the air. I will move the ECU battery further back to help fix that. Take-off weight was 62lbs. and it flew with a K-235G4+ and JR 16BPX Hybrid Rx with the flaps, speed brakes, and GS-200 (single channel operation) running on XBus. See below for some short video footage on the maiden takeoff and landing.

Great job. Did you balance with fuel in the central tank?
Mine lands with almost 1/2 a tank and it’s all forward of the balance.

I did not balance with fuel in the tank. I used the Xicoy system, and it indicated to add and additional 3oz in the nose. I kind of new the fuel would make it more nose heavy, and after the flights it was pretty obvious after rolling inverted. So, I will move my 3800 mAh ECU battery back near the end of the mounting plate from the nose gear structure and see how that goes. My timer was set for 7 minutes but landed a minute early on initial flights. Saddle tanks where empty and the main tank still close to full. I can easily see 9-minute flights with this turbine.

What kind of flight time are you getting with the P-220?

All the fuel is forward of the balance, so I fill the centre tank to just below the bung and balance.
Xicoy balancer is only good if you can guarantee the wheel axle position…which you cannot. Anyway, gets you close!

Remember the Mig like many 1950’s types has a small tailplane (stabiliser) so it will always need a push inverted.
I notice if I do a large loop late in the tank I have to pull harder going over the top than a loop early in the tank…

I have my timer at 9 mins.

Thanks for the tips, Dave! I was very reluctant to pull a complete loop with my MiG. I rolled out shortly after pulling over the top on one pass. Still building some confidence with the jet. The new K-235G4+ I have in it is plenty powerful, but it seems slow (laggy) to spool up and get going. It's currently set to Linear in the menu, which I think is the best option over the expo choices. Maybe I need to just get more time on the turbine to sort out the RPM cals. It's plenty fast on the top end at 105k RPM (view on data log) but should be hitting 107k per the specifications. Seeing the spotlight as its coming in for landing is really cool.

It has no bad habits, you will really enjoy it once you are comfortable. Awesome flying aeroplane, my take offs only use 50% power, it levitates with a small amount of flap.

The JetCat spool is quite quick, but with a draggy airframe, even hearing the turbine spool up means nothing as far as immediately accelerating the aeroplane,

The "throttle curve" setting does not affect the spool up. The K235 comes with the acceleration and decceleration parameter set to 8 by default (see run menu). I would suggest to lower both values to 5 and increase the pump limit by 20. This makes the turbine spool up & down faster.

Thomas what should the throttle curve be in doing this?

The throttle curve parameter does the same thing as dialing in expo on the transmitter but it does not affect how quickly the turbine accelerates or deccelerates. The throttle stick controls the RPMs of your turbine, but unlike electric motors a turbine does not increase thrust linear to RPMs. This means that a certain increase in RPMs does not result in the same amount of extra thrust. The "linear" throttle curve setting cures that issue. This linear curve however might cause problems when taxiing a jet that has a bigger than suggested motor, here you want more expo, this is why some people prefer "half expo". This issue has been discussed multiple times in this forum, see for example here: Throttle curce - LINEAR, HALF EXPO, FULL EXPO & why?

To actually change the time it takes to increase or decrease RPMs, you have to change the "acceleration" and "decceleration" parameter in the turbine "run menu" settings. As stated earlier, for most bigger Kingtech turbines the factory setting is 8. You can carefully lower these numbers but according to Kingtech reps you should not go lower than 5. At the same time it is suggested to increase the "pump limit" by 20.

Thomas

Latest U.K. Mig17 been in for a full check over, colour swap tweak on mine with a change of number.

Installation follows mine as closely as possible.

No, it's okay just getting the medium blue in an infinity scheme Rebel Pro. Andrea said it looks like the color Jeti used for a limited run of colors.
It looks good. Thanks
