Default Anything besides high speed fly bys?

A question from a non-jet pilot. I always read the jet forum and download all the videos... really great stuff and would like to give it a try myself one day, but the only thing I see is high speed fly bys? I've been to see the Blue Angles a couple times and the real jets can do a lot more. I know there has to be some very good jet pilots out there so what about crazy slow high AOA fly bys or any aerobatics? I understand the risk and cost of failure is very high but there must be some people that have been doing it long enough to try different stuff. I don't mean a pattern plane with a jet strapped to it's back, but your standard 200+ mph jet pushing the limits other than high speed. I would love to see different stuff.... a hammer head, tail slide, a less than stall speed vertial climb, anything... I'm sure some of it can be done.

thanks,
Mike

All you have to do to see most, if not all of the aerobatics you mention, is to attend most any Jet Rally. Watch the pilots with the sport planes like the Kangaroo, Bobcat, KingCat, etc.

Man, I don't know where you have been lately, but I have seen all that you have talked about at most of the rallys that I attended this year with the sports jets doing just that. You need to get out to more meets. Dave Ribbie's Bvm F16 doing high AOA at Heart of Ohio and Superman, Kent Nogey with a Bandit doing very slow very low figure eights , lots of Euro sports doing crazy moves, Jason from Cali. doing all of the pattern moves with a F86 or Bandit and alot more than I can type here. We love the speed still and always will but we (the jet pilots) can do it all if they want to with the new machine at our dissposel.

At the recent Lake Wales Jet Rally, you could see Bob Violett and his demo pilots Jason Somes, and David Shulman, as well as several other hot sticks do IMAC style flying.....on Bandits, BobCats, KingCats, and several other models....

For starters their routine included:

-Hammerheads
-Positive and Negative Snaps
-Upright and Inverted Spins
-Cuban 8
-Reverse Cuban 8
-Spit S
-Horizontal Rollers
-Vertical 8's
-4 pointers and slooww rolls
-tail slides

Isobars have been doing all of that for years and years. Before it was stylish!

The reason to buy a jet is to go fast, and have the turbine coolness, if you want to fly 3D buy a prop plane. IMO

Jason Somes is the MAN! Great guy to chat with....

Are you talking about aerobatics/3D on videos maybe? Most vids are high speed passes (which is fine with me-)

I find it as a relief to see all these jets fly! I am tired of seeing that guy that shows up with a double-wide trailer and pulls out that "EDGE" or "Giles". He takes off pulls up and hangs by the prop. He pulls out of it flies by, pulls up and hangs by the prop, etc. etc. I will be the first to tell you that I cannot do that, it definately does take talent to do it! But hell, if you've seen one, youve seen most all of them. Hell, its a relief to see the old flying lawnmower go by after about 55 mins of that!

Hi Guys
Watching Jamie Cortez from California, putting his turbine powered Rafale in a flat spin for about 15 secs, will give you a high pucker factor. Now thats entertainment !

Actually yes. John Gorham designed an airplane 10 years ago that took off, hovered, transitions into and out of forward flight, and vertically landed. Tom Hunt published his version of the same design in Model Airplane News awhile back as well.

Speeedddd!

I gotta agree with john & myles on this one.I got into jets for the same reason-it was all about the speed & rushhhhhh!! My outlook is- this is the only place in america where you can legally go 200mph!!Wouldnt it be something else to lap the daytona 500 just once and say seeeee ya guys!!!LOL .If I want to tumble, flatspin, snap, etc then I break the aerobatic prop jobs outta the trailer. If you listen to the Reno mustang pilots interviewed on discovery wings they see it the same way!!

They said it best-we fly the plane only for the love of the speed & the thrill/rush of 450 plus mph at 75 feet off the deck. Most of those guys are self made rich dudes to start with so the money is really no object to them. They really don't care if they make money at it-in fact they said they are lucky if they break even at the races. Its all about the speed & thrill of a high speed pass guys -nothing more nothing less!

The airplane looked a lot like The Rig actually, except it used a ducted fan type arrangement with control vanes behind the fan for control in the hover. The entire fan assembly rotated via jackscrew to transition from hover to forward flight.

I remember that. Wasn't it built as part of a contest?

BTW, a couple people said 3D. Gads no, I didn't mean 3D with a jet. The thought of it makes my stomach hurt. Just pushing the limits in a form other than high speed.

Actually, if you are waiting for the frequency, high speed passes are very good - it means the fuel tanks empty sooner......

Unfortunately, this theory doesn't seem to apply to 12 pounders...they seem to fly forever on a modest fuel load......

oops...forgot the winky

Man Ive seen more than you could believe. Sport jets are capable of any manuver. Ive seen and done almost everything from hovers, to knife edges,to inverted flatspins (Ive also seen inverted flat spins into the ground).

This wasn't a contest. It was an airplane designed by Tom Hunt called the Vertigo. It's still available as a M.A.N. plan. It was powered by an OS .46 VRDF in a home-made propfan shroud.
