House of Balsa F-86
I picked up one of these old kits and was wondering what to power it with? I looks to be the same wingspan as the JHH F-86 50" but I don't think the fuse is the same size. I can't see putting a 5" diameter fan in it. The instructions call out a midwest Rk-20B with a k&b 3.5. Anyone think that a turbax fan will fit. The BVM fan is a smaller diameter but that would probably be overkill. Any ideas.

I built one many moons ago.I ran a turbax 1 and a 7.5 K&B with the ole Perry pump, now those were the days.I installed a intake,to get some performance out of it.Had to use slimline retracts on it,monokoted the wing to keep it lite.
Good Luck

I also had one with a Turbax and 7.5 and Perry pump [sm=thumbdown.gif]. I ended up putting an OS 1.08 carb (forgot the number now) and it ran awesome. I can tell you that it would not fly with the canopy hatch on even with cheater holes. It flew just fine with it off however. It just couldn't get enough air with it on. I ended up losing it due to a broken throttle linkage.
I would say if you could get the proper fan and a .25 it would be great or if you go with the Turbax etc., just make sure it can suck some air. BTW, mine was fixed gear and monocoated wing.

I had one long ago. Turbax 1 with a K&B 7.5. It flew fine on this combo-What you need to do if you go this route is install the cheater hole in the bottom of the wing and mount blow in doors on the front behind the gun panels. You also need to cut the hatch back further than shown on the plans. I have seen them fly with the .21 engine and fan. (that is what it is designed for, and it is quite a bit smaller than the JHH 86) If you use the .21 you need to make it as light as poss. fixed gear, monokote etc. Scott

I had one with a kress 740 fan and a K&B 7.5
It did'nt last long.
After I trimmed it out, I climbed into a split S, when I pulled through the bottom the right half of the wing came off and that was that.

I think I might try a kress RK-740 with a OS 46 VXDF. The unit is only 4.25 dia. and their website shows a power curve for the fan and it looks like it will make about 8lbs of thrust with the engine. If I fully duct the intake would I still need the blow in doors and the aux intake through the wing???

The kress fan is so aggresively pitched, that it will get the air in anyway. I ain't too familiar with the HOB setup, but my HB A7, I blocked off the side "cheater" inlets.

that sucks! what happen just didnt build it strong enough? the only time Ive ever had a a plane lose a wing was a .60size ARF p-51. and the wings were foam core with plastic covering.. did a split -s and the bolts holding the wing on, stripped through the plastic/foam wing!! then you have a $600.00 scud missile.. [] I feel your pain..

I'm building the HOB kit right now also, hope to have it done by spring. The kit stock, is rudderless, It wont really need one, just the outline on the vertical tail looks to be just drawn on with a graphic pen. My kit didn't come with one either.

Nice work We manufacture the F-86 kit now www.ejf.com for the past 4 years and mostly electric ducted fan and very few glow. It's a great 50's jet and one we enjoy. It's been updated with foam core wings, sheeting included and laser cut formers and tail group. We do offer a build service and pre-assembled options to save time.

EDF of course. Micro Turbine is possible but over 3 times as much. of course you can't beat the real Turbine sound. (Yet)
We have an economy power package that produces 5 lbs. of static thrust and is about $600 and a high performance setup producing 7 lbs. of static thrust for about $900 (different fan/motor) - both range in flight times of 7 to 10 minutes depending on throttle management. We do this as part of our "Charge & Fly combos"
