Default Mounts for an odd sized turbine

Hello guys,

I am trying to fit this odd sized turbine to my Yellow Stingray. It is smaller than a RAM 500/Wren 54 so those mounts will not work.

Any ideas how to mount this? The mount should be sturdy cause...well it should be sturdy.

My ideas are the old tab mounts/straps like I had on the RAM 750, but I really want a normal aluminum mount like the JetCat stock mount. Hose clamps are out of the question. I have thought about using the swedge type hose clamps but I really do not want to do too much experimenting.

Thanks in advance for your input,

Hi Matt

Why not find a local sheet metal shop and get a JetCat like mount made?

Now that Ed mentioned it, I remember there was a great little sheet metal shop near Van Nuys airport that would probably take on a small project like this.

Why don't you just get some bailing wire and wrap it around the engine and sheet metal screw it down to the fuselage.

Isn't that plane painted yet!

I have carefully color matched the sheen and luster of K-36. Dramatic effect!

Hi Ed.

Is it that easy? My brother has a machine shop and I know how much we hated the walk in customer that wanted something made. I just never thought of those places as retail.

I needed to make a mount for my Wren 44 which is smaller than the RAM 500, MW54 and the P60. I used some aluminium about 1/16 thick by about 2 inches wide and wrapped it around the body of the turbine after protecting it with thin card, then I bent it where it needed it. Job done.

I had my P120 strapped inside a L1011 with automotive clamps, and they dented the can on the turbine (only around where the tightening nut was) .. no problem at all as per Bob Wilcox advice on this , but it could be suggested to put a thin plate under the hose clamp so as not to squish the can ..

I had a while ago seen a very light , quick-release system set up. Anyone know where to get one ? It would be nice to take out a pin, pull a latch, diconeect 2 festos, pull a plug, and in 10sec have your turbine out of the plane !!! Im looking for this, because im about to order yet another turbine, and dont feel like spending more $ on a turbine of a particular thrust that i already have in another plane .. i would love to do quick transplans between planes at the field in a matter of minutes ...

anyone know who makes somehting like this ? or who can make it ??

Hi Matt

Yup! I drew up the mount for our Kangaroo. Phoned two or three places close to my other office. Walked in, showed them what I wanted, and they had it ready for me the next day.

Just don't make it too complicated. They should have standard punches and rolling dies that they could use to make something quick.

something very humorous about matt mixing in a few chandeliers, plant holders, and oh yeah a turbine mount. sounds like the perfect gift for the newlyweds!

Kevin and Pat,

Nice ideas but they sound suspiciously like work!

I would try to weld up new SS straps but I hate to think the safety of the greater Tampa area would depend on my welding skills.

Kevin, have they got one that I can feed something wider than 1" into? Hard to search here, I am on jury duty using my Sprint PCS phone and it is pretty slow.

BTW who is going to Florida from Tejas? We have a mega tent if you guys need room

Aw, come on Matt. A little work is not going to hurt you. Besides, if you buy the tools to make engine mounts everyone here will know who they can call to get that "special" mount they have been needing. You will make all kinds of new friends.

They have one that will handle up to 12" wide (20 gauge aluminum, 26 gauge steel) for $99.99.

Item # 36698-1ADA
Does not show up on the web page, but it is in the latest sale catalogue.

Matt,
I just got another idea for you (Yes, I'm bored today).
Just go to the canned goods section of your local supermarket and I'll bet you can find a produce can that is pretty close to the same size as that engine. Empty the contents (Mmm, shop snack) fill the can with sand and seal, then use the can as a die to bend the aluminum around.

Why don't you contact ArtesJet USA and buy a set of factory made Bee mounts. The Bee is 83mm diameter so they should work fine in your odd sized turbine

Funny, I thought the Bee was smaller than my odd motor.......who knows these days, what with all these different specs and prices....wheww, hard to keep up!!

Thanks for the hint, but I have not indulged in Artes technology for a long time. I think the can of beans idea sounds good though:-)

Welcome to RCU and congrats on your first post!
