Guys/Gals, who makes a good all around (cost, quality, ease of use and setup) paint gun. I am looking for something that will mate with my 20 gal compressor and do a good job spreading paint on my new jet. Till now, I have had a paint shop put the paint in spray cans for me. Works great for cowls and wheel pants, but a whole fuse and wings is a different ball game.
Looks like I will be using cheveron perfect paint on this one, but later projects may warrant different paint types.
Thanks,
Jason

I have this one, and it works very well. It is very similar to the one Jeremy talks about in his How To Thread, but much cheaper. The key to this, and all spray guns is to keep the parts clean.

An amoeba could get great results with this gun.
Available at allsprayguns.com, but their site is currently down. Check also

Any gravity feed gun with a 1.3 or 1.4mm tip works well. There are major differences between them of course. Depending on what you are willing to spend.
Be careful with guns like the ones from Harbor freight, they generally have plastic pieces in them which can and will wear out very quickly, especially with solvent based paints.
The one I was using for almost everything is a great gun, by a company called APC, the gun is called the Artisan. I'm not a big fan of HVLP, specifically for clear. The APC gun is available for around $120US, but I'm not sure where you can get them online, I know they are available here, and I'm more than happy to pick them up and ship them out if you were interested.
I just recently purchased the mother of all spray guns, if you want the best then there is no better company than Sata. I have 2 of their guns, the minijet 3 HVLP and the Satajet RP digital. Even their lower end guns are fantastic. The RP digital is halfway between HVLP and high pressure. It uses about 50% of the paint that my regular gun does, but it atomizes the paint far far better than any gun I've used and it lays out glass smooth. I was hesitant to buy it because up here they are nearly $1000 Canadian but they let me take it and try it, after 5 minutes I had decided to buy it. However, it's what I make my living with, if I was just painting for myself, the APC Artisan would be my choice, Devilbiss makes good stuff too at a good price, Iwata has some fantastic guns as well, the LPH400 would be my choice after the RP digital.
What I learned after spraying with the RP digital compared to the guns I thought were awesome before, is that my old guns were like driving a trans-am, the RP is the Ferrari, both work, and both perform well, but there are definitely differences.
After using it, if you are willing to spend the money, I wouldn't recommend anything but the Sata line (no, I dont' work for, have any affiliation with, or get good deals from Sata, I'm just being dead serious)

I have both a Walcom STM and a SATA Minijet III I like a 1.2 mm for general spraying and 1.0 or even 0.7 mm for fine work like detailing. I also really like the HVLP guns and after you use them a little bit they "grow" on you.

Thanks for the info guys.
I am curious about some things. Can someone outline to me these items below.
1. Toxicity scale. (i.e. from least to most the more popular paints and products. By name and composition would be helpful.) Like where does Cheveron Perfect Paint fall type thing.
2. Level of protective gear needed scale. (i.e. when you only need good ventilation to full forced air respirators and such)
In researching guns and considering a purchase of one, I have become more educated as well as confused and more than anything concerned about health implications and would like to know what I need to do with what products to protect myself and how. I want to learn as well as do, but not at the expense of my ignorance harming others or me.
I know that these questions are pretty intense, but I would like to feel as informed as possible before doing something potentially bad.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Jason,
Probably most of the questions you have will be answered in this post I did, I actually had done it for a guitar building forum I visit, but 99% of it applies here as well
