...Ok guys I need some help here...here is the situation...club noise policy is 100 dB @ 3 meters at full power... (the turbines will not)...this was set up to address piston powered prop engines...but some club members are very adament about having a written policy...and are hell bent on NOT exempting the turbines...(obviously we have no problem with noise inflight) but some feel the need to be able to objectively evaluate by using a set parameter...so , please share with me what your club has done to address this issue or any ideas you may have so that we can continue to fly the turbines at our field. Thanks in advance for your input..

Scott,
Our club also has very strict noise limitations. We hired a professional sound guy to help us set the guidelines for our noise rules and regulations. What he explained to us was that ground level noises don't radiate as far due to obstructions on the ground (trees, shrubs, fences, buildings, etc.) When airborne the sound will travel and be heard over much greater distances hence our turbines on the ground at full throttle are well above 100db but in the air is almost whisper quiet. What you can do is hire a proffessional to help you draft sound requirements for your club. We took readings on the ground at a maximum of 14 feet from the model and then we took readings from the closest house in each direction from our field (N,S,E, & W). Then we established what is and is not acceptable from those distances. We also have a separate set of rules governing sound limitations for our turbines as well which basically gives us a few more DB on the ground for full power run ups.

Think god we are in the middle of nowhere at ARCA right next to the shot gun range. And if any one at our field has a problem with turbine noise they can come talk to me. I guarantee they will not like my response. But we have never had that problem. everybody around our field enjoys them.

That was not a POS turbine that was making all that loud noise, that was Dan breaking wind.you could definitely sling all the bearing out of a db meter if it got too close to that.
