Default AV8R Bit the dust today!

On take off I lost my sterring servo and had to abort into the safety fence. I got the turbine shut down before the impact and it was undamaged.

The airframe was broke in half and the wings were torn-up.

So I now have a FTE-500 for sale if anyone is interested!!

My AV8R bit the dust today also at the Dallas Jet Rodeo.

Got dis-oriented and it got too slow in a turn and snapped into a spin. I was able to shut the engine down about 2 seconds before impact.

Everything is junk except the turbine! Not a scratch lol

Ouch![:@] Man, I feel your pain... thats too bad, it was a nice bird and you hadn't had it for too long either.

Are you going to build another? I know if I lost my AV8R I'd have another kit ordered immediately.

Sorry again guys, both of you...

actually I would really like to find a reasonably priced BVM F-86 kit that someone may have thats been laying around forever that could be converted.

I saw one flying this weekend with a RAM 500 and its fantastic.

Ronnie,

Sorry to have witnessed your loss. I have seen F-86's here come and go. Im pretty sure that there is still one on sale NIB, but the owner wanted to sell everything including the DF and DF hardware (all BVM). Do a search and see if it' still here.

I really wish I had one of my DF's to fly at the activity, maybe add some Jet Aerobatics Flava.

Too many Bobcats out there, but they sure fly good!

L8r,

David

SHOK,

After all the nice things you did to show me your installation etc, and the comments re why you had an AV8R, I'm really sorry to hear it went down. I know this is part of the hobby and risk factor but it still is a real shame. Today I was very lucky, I was flying my Glens CAP 232 for the 3rd time, having had issues with the engine previously, but today it was bang on. I'm still getting used to it and was doing some high G stuff (not wholly intentionally) when I heard the "fart of death", i.e. flutter.

Immediately I went straight and level, off throttle and made the best landing ever!!!

The hinges on the aileron are film, and one had torn!!! Lucky lucky me!!!

I also think your a pretty "feet on ground" guy, as you admit to pilot error,. my previous have all been radio or structural failure.............

Sorry again, and I hope you get what you want next and don't have the bad luck.

Bought ear defenders today and ran the Wren at the field, the guys liked it!!!

Thanks Gazzer, all in all I am extremely lucky.
Besides loss of the airframe, the only items destroyed were the fuel pump, gas solenoid and thermocoupler. The ECU has a cracked case but is working perfectly. I have a tiny dent on the turbine tailcone but thats it. It could have been much much worse.

I will still box it all up and ship it off for inspection just in case.

Shok,

You are one upbeat guy!!! I guess you are going to have the ECU checked too? In my experience the odd crack across somewhere might just be a point of failure for future, but the guys can test it and give you confidence I hope.

Let me know what you get next, I am interested!!

Just out of interest, what do you say to your partner at times like this!!!?

Mine on seeing the bin liner usually stifles a grin, which becomes a smirk, which then becomes a naughty giggle and she runs off, saying sorry!! Then she proceeds to revel in telling anyone that I crashed it!!She might not if a jet goes in though............ However, I usually get my own back when the lights go off!!!!

I guess I was really lucky only the airframe was hurt on mine and not that bad at that!

After tearing down the model the nose wheel assy was brazed to the robart gear and the brazed part failed which allowed the nose wheel to rotate 360 deg with moderate force (Not noticeable during taxi unfortunately)

I even started up my motor after wards and like clockwork it started right up!

But after seeing the eurosport fly and besides the fact that I have one, I need to build.
I will probably sell my motor and go on with a bigger one.

I can say I have had a better experience with FTE than my jet cat as the FTE has NEVER NOT STARTED!! My jet cat seems to be much more sensitive to different temp changes so a 2-3 try start is not that uncommon for me any way on my HP5.

They do make good air bags for the turbines don't they? Gotta to love a crash where the only thing alive is the engine.
Good luck

Looking at your picture reminds me of my AV8R at Florida jets(Blue Angels #2). Mine went straight in about 2 feet past the far runway. The front of the fuse stuck right into the ground and looked like a fence post snapped off. The fuse was mangled but everything else survived. Pat sold me a new fuse at a deal that couldn't be beat. Now it is all rebuilt and has had about 4 flights on it since. The turbine on mine broke loose in the crash, but pivoted as it did, and lodged inside the fuse. It broke through all the balsa sheeting and came a stop at the former behind the wing. The engine was started up after the crash and there was no damage.

I think Don discovered that it wasn't the servo
After tearing down the model the nose wheel assy was brazed to the robart gear and the brazed part failed which allowed the nose wheel to rotate 360 deg with moderate force (Not noticeable during taxi unfortunately)

KAPTAN KAOS, thats a good looking plane.

I think the twin fin design and that engine tab saved my engine.
The rear fuse broke clear behind the wing and the aluminum tab bent but never let go which kept the engine from impacting the ground.
Something hit the FOD screen pretty hard, whatever it was went on and dented the tailcone a tiny bit.

I will pack it all up and send it to Frank this week to check it all out.
I may call Pat and order another AV8R, but Im kind of torn between that or a Facet 1200. I plan on building an F-86 but I would like to keep a grass field flyer around for every weekend flying.
Anyone know how much fuel a Facet 1200 holds?

Ronnie,

I would go with Facet 1200 for grass field. My buddy Gary Baker has the 2300 and I've seen the gear take a couple not so easy landings with our grass field. But let me tell you, as long as the turbine is running the Facet is ready for action. Plus the guide on the Facet appears to be great too.

Had the Facet been available when I first got my turbine, I would have gotten that for my first turbine jet instead of the Reaper. I think it is a great trainer jet and it flies very well.

Make me an offer on mine and I may sell them to you. The wheels will need to be replaced soon (Flat spots) but everything else is ok and works. The nose wheel is a dual wheel on a robart strut.
