Why do rc and real jets and real planes use retracts?
Ive always wanted to know. Wouldnt it be more conveniant and safe to always have the landing gear down?

Are you a troll or just incredibly naive/young? Friction is the enemy of cars, planes, boats, etc. The idea is to be as slick as possible so as to have as little resistance as possible. Greater resistance means greater fuel consumption, less speed, and increased noise. At very high speeds, the problems generated by extra drag is exponentially detrimental.

Sorry, but dosen't this kind of question belong in a beginner section?? If you at the level of flying a jet, then you should understand why retacts are used. I am not a mean person, but this dosen't belong here. I think the answers being given here hint to that also. Just my 2 cents worth[8D]

I don,t think that you have to fly a jet to chat here or that everyone that chats here flys a jet. ..and i.ll bet that at some point in everyones life they didn,t know how planes flew!! ya think

Leave him alone, he's an official Simpsons and Tmaxx freak!....lol This thread should be in the aerodynamics category or some place else. Not to High-Jack the thread, but speaking of speed and fuel economy: Does anyone know if using a fod screen reduces performance, and if so how much? I'm sure it affects it a little, but is it significant? btw...I'm running a P-120 in my AD-F16 if that helps. I know that there weren't, if any, very many guys installing them in DF models.
P.S. If 'T to the Maxx2' is still around, pm me I'll tell ya how it all works.

I use a FOD screen on my P80 and have found very little lose of power if any (no specific numbers). Its also cheap protection for the engine, as they say one pebble of sand can turn ecstasy into agony!!!!

I thought the retracts were just to make the plane look better. You have to admit that they always look better with the gear up..........right?
Also putting them up cuts down on wind noise.
Right?
BTW - I always use a FOD screen and I do not think any of the commercially available screens reduce performance. I fly off grass and I have to clean the grass clippings off the screen periodically.

I asked Chris Mounkley (owner of TJT), a few years back, about using a FOD screen. He told me to run the engine without the screen, then again with. If the EGT was the same, go ahead and use it. I assume that is a good indication of if the intake flow to the compressor is restricted. I did so with a home-made strainer type of FOD screen and the EGT was the same (or at least as close as I could tell).

Wheels down=drag=less speed
But you need wheels down for landing unless you are a nut so we invented retracts.

Don't forget, guys. This is the same guy who got 3 successful landings on his buddies turbine jet with no flight experience.

I also wanted to know this. I am leaving now to complete my jetcat 200 powed Fokker triplane.
Hey, don't knock it guys. It made me chuckle.

He's about as much a troll here as you are in the "Best scale photo" thread.

RE: Why do rc and real jets and real planes use retracts?
Let me answer this.
A few designers invented the retractable gear because it was not practical to have just a dolly on take of, and leave it on the ground. Since they were afraid that someone would steal the wheels in flight, it was wise to have a way to lock that inside the plane. Incidently, they also discovered that the plane was flying faster and also did not burn so much fuel. Last but not least, it made it for more interesting operation when one leg did not lock in position.
Anyway, this is for real planes...For the models, we came up with retract in order to use the 6th channel of the radio, and incidently, this allowed for sharpening pilot's skills, as some gears where mechanical, electric and pneumatic. I remember a nice chap that was flying in a competition with a F82( that is a twin mustang)..there was a short in the electrical system of the gear, an electronic failure and his F82 was instantly rekitted.
In best case, theretract allows you to practice belly landing...We can even include this in fun fly event contest...The longest skid on asphalt. or the most shaved fuselage...the best broken prop...you decide.
I hoe I did contribute to your education

RE: Why do rc and real jets and real planes use retracts?
Hehehe, I love it. Brings to mind a bumper sticker I read that says "Mean people suck"
Gear down produces an exponentially greater drag on the aircraft thus increasing fuel cost, and robbing performance, and speed. On some real Jets, there is a sensor that tells the flight computer when the wheels are off the ground so it can get the gear up before the craft reaches a speed that would tear the gear off the plane. Also, extending the gear to land is limited by the flight computer for much the same reason. I guess there had been enough cases where the pilot didn't get the gear up in time and damaged the gear, that the engineers figured retracting the gear needed to be automatic.
There are no dumb questions, but there are people that are too dumb to ask questions.
No insult intended to anyone!!!
